NEW MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

The second announcement for new media - graphite and white charcoal on toned paper! this style is not commonly used in pet portraits, but I think this medium has a lot of potential for commissioned drawings. Working on neutral paper is a more natural technique where every stroke is placed with purpose. In reality, there is no white, only highlights that give the illusion of white.

My professional background is in lighting (I used to work in the film industry), I'm all about every highlight and shadow having a reason for being there. This technique offers the chance to place a highlight and know exactly why it is there.

You may have noticed my pencil drawings on white paper have little to no untouched space. Every detail is shades of grey, with occasionally a touch of white highlight. This is because, to create more realistic results, I have to cover up almost all of the white paper with graphite. Working with toned paper is much like working backwards, purposefully layering the highlights, mid tones, then shadows. Grey vs tan paper yields different results - tan paper can produce a somewhat sepia tone to the drawing (which I think is fantastic!). My next adventure will include using grey toned paper.

Ultimately, it's those highlights that I love. I feel it gives the drawing a whole new level of dimension.

The tools I'm using are my usual graphite and carbon blend pencils, but introducing the white charcoal pencil into the mix.

For those who don't know, white charcoal is made from calcium carbonate, which is naturally white. They're not actually made of charcoal, making the name a bit misleading, but there you go.

Fun fact: notable artists who used toned paper for drawing are Michelangelo and Rubens.

WHAT AM I WORKING ON NOW

I'm currently working on the not-so-fun aspect of my job - bookkeeping. It's that time of year again that I never look forward to. ;)

The large pencil commission is finished and shipped to the client, soon to be at its home in the United States (it's a gift so I can't share it yet)!

I also recently finished a couple digital drawings. One was for a prestigious client that was very exciting! It turned out beautifully (can't share it yet as it's also a gift). The other digital drawing is of my own dog, Casper (scroll down to see it!). Apart from that, I am working on the graphite/toned paper drawing whenever I have the chance.

In between commissions, I have also been working on illustrations for a book over the last couple months. I am getting close to finishing them all!

RECENTLY COMPLETED DRAWINGS

My recent work has mostly been gifts, so not shareable yet! I always ask my client whether the drawing is a gift and when to expect it to be gifted. I will not share any of these secret commissions publicly until it has been seen by the recipient! Wouldn't want the surprise to be ruined.

Here are a couple of recent digital drawings. The first is my own Labrador, Casper. The beautiful German Shepherd was a Christmas commission. The reference photo was very low quality but I was able to add in all those details, the client loved it!

RANDOM FACT ABOUT ME

Apart from my artwork, my life revolves around my best friend, Casper! We are always together, he is my biggest fan and the best cuddle monster. He is also the subject of many of my personal drawings.

Interesting fact about him, he is a charcoal Labrador Retriever. His colouration with the tan points is extremely rare.

He is obsessed with toys (he easily has 20 right now). He usually brings some of them to bed with him. He loves sleeping in in the morning, playing in the snow, catching frisbees, and of course FOOD. I'm all about feeding him healthy, homemade treats (he loves sweet potato chips and pumpkin cookies).
