October, 2024

Thanks to everyone that attended the Fall Picnic/Potluck/Jam at Bartley Ranch Regional Park Three different jam groups got going, and great pickin' was heard all around. Lots of great food, catching up with friends, and meeting new ones.

Upcoming events include the Nov. 14 Concert featuring the California Bluegrass Reunion Band (click here) and we're looking for a time and place to hold a Winter Gathering -- potluck, jamming, etc. Suggestions welcomed! Stay tuned.

Educational Outreach

This Spring, we are offering a series of Saturday workshops that include "hands on" activities, discussions, musical instruction and performances designed to explore the unique history of American String Bands, dating back to the early 20th Century. Bluegrass, Old Time, Folk and (one can argue), even Rock and Roll are all examples of string bands.

"String Band Stories" will consist of 4 Saturday sessions, each 2 weeks apart (see flyer here). We are offering this program free to High School and College students with IDs. Adults can enroll for $20 per session, or $60 for all 4 sessions (NNBA members get 20% off with their Member Number).

We are still working out all the details, but anticipate having some well-known String Band experts and performers to help us with this program. Registrations will open on November 15.

As many of you know, we, as an organization, really need to increase our outreach to youth and more diverse audiences, and the "String Band Stories" project is a big part of this. It's not an inexpensive project, and we are currently seeking sponsors and grant funds to support the program. We appreciate any help or suggestions that any of you can contribute to our outreach efforts. Spread the word! Encourage your friends, children, grandchildren, etc. to sign up for this unique educational opportunity! And, while I always feel squeamish about asking, our donation button is connected ONLY to our Educational Outreach Funds account, and all funds received are restricted to educational expenses.

3 Different Formats for the Events Calendar

There's A LOT of information on our Events Calendar! And in the upper right corner, you can choose which format works best for you -- Monthly, Agenda or Pinboard. The Green Button on the upper right also lets you submit your own events (please make sure they're relevant to Bluegrass- lovers!)

And there have been some changes to jams in our area, so check the Area Jams Page often. We have over 10 Bluegrass jams a month happening around here!

And, if you haven't looked at our website in awhile, there's a ton of content!

  • Bands for Hire (send us your 1-page promo if you haven't already)

  • Free Instruction for all Bluegrass Instruments (with print-your-own materials and audio tracks to practice with)

  • Media Gallery (send us photos to add!)

  • Youth Scholarships (taking applications now for April awards)
