Lilou and lining

Hello all you beautiful subscribers and welcome to my July newsletter. I finally finished the Lilou Dress from the book Love At First Stitch and I'm absolutely in love with it. As with the Clemence Skirt, I can't say that the pattern really grabbed me initially, but the combination of the fabric, lining and the fit makes it my proudest make to date. There is something so luxurious in having a fully lined garment, the feeling of high-end quality, and it elevates my confidence when I wear it.

This month I share my process for lining the skirt, as the original pattern only has the bodice lined. Although the linen I used for the outer dress was soft, the cotton voile I used for the lining was so smooth and added to the feeling of luxury so I'm glad I did it.

Before attaching the zip at the back, I tried it on to check the fit and realised the waist was 4cm too big. I adjusted the centre back seam and documented my process to have it fitting just right.

And of course I then put everything together in a MingMakesMistakes post, so you can see my tips and tutorials, thought processes and mistakes as I went through this project.

This is the last pattern in the book, and it makes me reflect on my sewing journey so far. I started this book early last year to learn the basics and I've learnt so much, not just about sewing but also about myself. I have developed such a passion for this hobby that comes from learning something new while creating something new. I love the precision and attention to detail that it demands, while also being kind to myself by saying, "Ah, no one will notice that"! I make plenty of mistakes but enjoy the lessons learned and the puzzle-solving required to get me back on track. And at the end of it, I have a garment I can wear that makes me feel amazing because it was made uniquely for me with love.
