It has rained all weekend here in Southern California. The scorched earth is being nourished, and soon, the leaf-barren trees will bud anew. This week, Jewish tradition encourages us to celebrate this rebirth with the Birthday of the Trees, the holiday known as Tu B’Shvat.

This holy day recognizes that growth in the physical world mirrors growth in the spiritual world. In fact, the first Tu B'Shvat order of service was found in a pamphlet in 1728 in Venice, Italy and pulled heavily from the spiritually centered kabbalistic tradition. It recognized that just as the physical world can be famished, so can the spirit. And, just as the physical world can be rejuvenated, so can the spirit. Judaism celebrates these dual realities in this holy day where we recognize the natural cycles of each, and celebrate the season that brings us new life.

Many people plant trees or other vegetation to mark this day. And it is a little known fact that if you plant parsley this week, it should be ready to place on your seder plate by Passover. What a powerful idea: the tending to one's spirit can lead to liberation for all.

Just as the natural world is on a cycle of renewal, so may we each find rejuvenation at this season!

Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

Rabbi Heather Miller,

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

CHICAGO THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

This week, Rabbi Miller spoke to students of the "Managing Inter-religious Non-Profits" class at Chicago Theological Seminary. Professor Najeeba Syeed invited Rabbi Miller to share of her experiences in non-profit inter-religious spaces. Rabbi Miller shares:

"I spoke with just around 20 students, each a leader in their community. We discussed the importance of inter-religious organizing, and the skills needed to effectively manage non-profits seeking to engage in this sacred work. Of highest importance are the values of commitment to one another, solidarity, and inter-religious understanding. I shared a few organizing principles that guide me:

-we are always planting seeds of understanding,

-our job as religious leaders is to frame encounters with various faith communities,

-we are responsible to keep hearts open to appreciating one another,

-we must always move forward, no matter how incremental the movement is,

-we can model authentic friendships,

-we can search out and know those with whom we partner,

-we can rejoice in differences, and model appreciation for where the other is coming from,

-our work should center upon those to whom we are accountable (values, God, people who keep us focused), and not worry about the rest, and

-we must show up for one another."

May the students of the class be fortified in their work!

What people say:

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."
