Week 6 Recap

Phonics

This week, our spotlight was on the word 'THE, a key sight word for us.

In our letter journey, we explored A, S, and P. While none of our classmates share these beginning initials, we had fun comparing names like Sonic and Spiderman. Interestingly, we discovered two friends with last names starting with 'P.

In our Star Letter Names activity, we dove into counting letters, studying their shapes, understanding syllables, and making comparisons with other names.

Exploring letters and their sounds is an exciting adventure! I encourage you to reinforce these letters during reading time at home and even during everyday activities like grocery shopping or walks. Challenge your child to spot these letters in their surroundings. It's a fun way to reinforce their learning outside the classroom!

Math

In math we focused on the number 6 this week. I encourage you to continue to assist your child at home when writing numbers - ensuring they are starting at the top and working to the bottom. Below are all of the numbers we have covered so far in class and the rhymes to go along with them.

Second Step

This past week in Second Step your child learned about and practiced being assertive.

During Week 7 students will discuss feelings.

A little more about our week ...

On Thursday, during our apple exploration, we had a blast with a measuring activity! Students got hands-on with string and cubes to measure their apple's length and used a balance scale to weigh it with bear manipulatives. They also identified their apple's color and size. To top it off, we had an exciting class discussion about whether an apple would sink or float. Enjoy chatting with your child about their apple adventures at home! 🍎✨

On Friday, during our morning gathering, we celebrated Todd Parr's 'Be Who You Are Day,' inspired by his book 'Be Who You Are.' Together, we explored the pages of the book, sparking insightful discussions about the uniqueness that defines each of us.

Looking for things to do at home?!

I enjoy offering families suggestions for activities they can do at home with their children. I share with the students that if they bring back any completed homework, they can earn a WOW slip from me, recognizing their exceptional effort and academic achievements outside of school.

Therefore, if your child finishes any of the tasks listed below, has any unfinished assignments, or reads one of our emergent reader books from school to you at home, please inform me by email or by signing the provided paper. Your child will then receive a well-deserved WOW slip after returning it to school.

Reinforce the skills your child is learning at school by ...

  • Making a list of words that start with the letter S.

    • BONUS if they write the words on their own or trace your words.

  • Finding the words THE in the books & stories you read together.

    • BONUS - Tally mark the number of times you find each word.

  •  Writing numbers 0 - 6.
