Team EYPiC have been working hard to better understand how public consultations are currently run, and what efforts are made to include young people aged 18-25.

Last week, we spoke to Suffolk County Council, Sustrans and Transport for London about their consultation processes. We noted, that whilst work is underway to increase engagement with the public in consultations, hearing the voices of young people in these formal conversations is an ongoing challenge. Whilst resources, both monetary and human, are a limiting factor in some areas, for many, the biggest limiting factor in changing consultation practices to engage young people, is just knowing what is best to do. This is where we hope to help.

Over the coming weeks, we will be working with Suffolk County Council, Sustrans and Transport for London to explore the impact of the EYPiC toolkit, and to identify the approaches that provide the 'biggest bang for buck', when it comes to improving the engagement of young people in public consultations.

What is EYPiC?

EYPiC is a collaborative project that aims to transform how public consultations are conducted by actively involving young people aged 18-25. Originating from a collaborative effort among policymakers and young people, the project, which is currently funded by the Rees Jeffery’s Road Fund, seeks to address the gap in participation of young people in public decision-making processes.

We have 3 key objectives:

  • Increase the engagement of young people in public consultations.

  • Update and improve current consultation practices.

  • Evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of new approaches.

Involving young people in public decision-making is crucial for creating policies that are truly inclusive and reflective of diverse community needs.
