DISCOVERIES

Breathing in Sleep Impacts Memory Processes

Researchers from LMU, Max Planck Institute for Human Development, and the University of Oxford have found a connection between breathing during sleep and memory. In fact, the experiment they conducted leads to possible consequences of unhealthy breathing on memory.

The researchers conducted their experiment on 20 study participants, in which each had to study 120 images which were associated with certain words. Then the participants slept for around two hours. When they awoke, they were asked about the words and images they had previously learned. Furthermore, the participants’ brain activity and breathing was recorded through EEG during both the sleep as well as learning period.

The researchers discovered that this previously learned content was spontaneously reactivated by the sleeping brain during so-called slow oscillations during sleep. In other words, slow and healthy breathing during sleep had the best results when recalling the associated words from the studied images. According to lead researcher Dr. Thomas Schreiner, "Our results show that our breathing and the emergence of characteristic slow oscillation and spindle patterns are linked".
