JANUARI 2023

What did your 'sunset' of 2023 look like?

If you stayed in the Netherlands, like me, you probably endured nothing but rain. Fortunately, I have no trouble keeping myself busy indoors, and you can guess what with. ; )

I prefer reading or listening about making art or doing it myself. And if I don't, I still think about it. And to turn even more ideas into paintings and have time to do so in 2024, I have decided to say 'no' even more to what stops me. It's not always easy, but that easel is calling me and for now I'm going to comply!

What I hope for everyone is also such a calling that feels so real and attractive that you do want to engage in it day and night. And if you don't have that yet, start looking for it. It is my engine for happiness and health.

Returning to the horizon. You will come across a work in the newsletter inspired by the most 'seething' sunset I have experienced. During those rainy days in late 2023, I looked back on a beautiful hike in Switzerland and made my first mountain landscape. Read more about it in a news blog!

Finally, late but still,

All the best for 2024!

Love,

Frank

ANTONI TAPIES IN BRUSSEL'S MUSEUM BOZAR

Ever seen work by Tapies?

Below is a work of his that was on display during a retrospective in Brussels, Bozar museum. I visited it with friends and my sister just before it closed in early January this year.

We drove there especially to see his work in real life for once. His style and lifelong research, among other things, inspired me to get where I am today with my abstract work. The simplicity, powerful compositions and poetic eloquence can really hold me.

Who knows, maybe you'll savor it too.

Here's a link to an old but nice BBC docu on YouTube.

BLOG: NEW SELF PORTRAIT

Selfportrait on paperboard

Not strongly resembling but I was still happy with this piece. Loose brushstrokes, transparent shadows that I wanted to experiment with back in 2023.

I wrote a piece about the creation which you can read about in this little blog. In English and Dutch.

BLOG: MY FIRST MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE PAINTING

This is the little painting based on that impressive sunset I saw at the end of a beautiful climb in the Swiss alps.

You can read about the story behind it in this little blog. In English and Dutch.

Oil on canvas, 15 x 21 cm

NEW ABSTRACT ART COMING UP

I have made a new series of small abstract pieces that will soon be ready to view online on my website and available for sale. I'll keep you informed and come back soon.
