January 2020 Newsletter #5

Hello FDDR villagers,

welcome to our Newsletter #5 and 2020 a brand-new year! (insert fireworks here)

Wow, another great year we had! Many of you stepped up and your donations helped and were really appreciated by the ones in need.

Don’t let winter and its unique challenges get you and your family down, though. Yes, it is cold outside and everything will be covered in snow soon and know many, many out there need your help now more then ever.

We are a Non Profit and 100% volunteer organization dependent on donations.

FDDR 2020 Goals

As you can imagine a lot of hours go into preparing for the daily route and we are expanding our team of volunteers to help behind the scene, like sort and organize the donations we receive, building contacts  and so much more.

You too can help FDDR or in your own neighborhood, every little gesture gives hope to others! Message us with any questions you may have and we will get back to you. Together we can make a difference!

Our immediate goal is to procure a filled pantry and winter-goods for our daily outreach efforts.

Focusing on bringing awareness, fundraising to be able to expand our reach (route).

This year we will also build more connections with businesses, schools etc. plus work closer with other Non Profits/groups. Your help is always needed and appreciated!

The homeless are not invisible. Any one of us can be homeless because of an unexpected tragedy, job loss, divorce, death, etc. It’s so easy to be kind.

Please be inspired and help us help others. We don't live in a perfect world, and there's never going to be a perfect time to give - but there are always a need of help. Whether interest rates are rising, the economy is in the doldrums, or even if you're experiencing financial difficulties of your own, the reality is that when you donate your money or time, you help others who need it and it warms your heart.

A special thank you to all our cooks for making such delicious meals an also the many donors that supplied FDDR with the excess food from parties and other donations.

.

A new decade is upon us and we plan to make the year 2020 another year where we will be able to help more then before.6 days a week, with your support, we are out there! FDDR had a great year and was able to grow, serve and reach out more then ever before.

Thank you very, very much

Mat, Rose & Dina

So shines a good deed in a weary world

My son Cameron (some may remember seeing him on the FDDR feeds) deliver door mats around our neighborhood in secret.  We place them on porches and spread holiday cheer.  You see when he got to the age of no longer believing in Santa we thought we'd tell him its now his time to become a Santa.  So four years ago our new tradition began!  We love to imagine the looks on their faces when they see them.  A little secret Santa spreads love to those that least expect it!  The best kind of giving is the gift that is given with no expectations of receiving something in return.  God Bless you and yours from one Santa to another!

A little story about Robert and I.

We were in the grocery store and saw a older gentleman with a few groceries in back of us and told the cashier to put them on our bill.  The gentlemen found us loading our car and came to tell us thank you and how much that $15.00 worth of food will impact his budget. I still see that happy wrinkly face in my heart every time I go into that store.

This summer I had the honor of helping local veterans here in Rhode Island. The local organization helps veterans and their families with many needs, specifically offering legal assistance, food and clothing assistance etc. My service to this organization was in September for their camp-out weekend where local businesses and community members donate goods and services free of charge to these veterans. My task that weekend was to make sure each person had their equipment for camping as well as hygiene items for camp-out. I was lucky enough to meet many families and individuals due to this day of service which will never be enough to thank or repay for what they have done for not only our country but the local community as a while from their service. I like being able to give my time directly because you get to see the joy in the person who is utilizing your help, but for me its even greater then that in a way I cant describe.

Some ideas to make a brighter world!

  • Let your first check of the year be to charity.
  • Help a friend or neighbor in need.
  • Volunteer at an organization of your choice. (hint, hint FDDR)
  • Buy a gift for your mother or grandmother - just because.
  • Write a thank-you note to someone who won’t expect it.
  • Find unneeded items in your house and donate them to a charitable organization.
  • Organize a meal for FDDR and appreciate being together.
  • Support us and create a fundraiser for FDDR use this link www.facebook.com/fund/feedingDetroitanddownriver/
  • When you are outside, stop and look around you. Take time to appreciate nature.
  • Find a piece of winter clothing that you haven’t worn all season, and donate it to a charity.
