The Resident District Commissioner of Kisoro, Hajji Badru Sebyala, has issued a warning to residents living along the border regarding the illegal hosting of refugees escaping the conflict-ridden Democratic Republic of Congo. This caution comes as the Uganda People’s Defence Forces withdraw from their previously held territories in the Eastern part of the country.
With the withdrawal of Ugandan forces, there has been a notable increase in the number of refugees entering the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Bunagana border. RDC Sebyala stressed the importance of Ugandans adhering to legal guidelines when dealing with Congolese individuals entering Uganda.
Sebyala emphasized that, despite any existing connections between Ugandans and Congolese, hosting refugees is strictly prohibited. He stated that all refugees must go through the proper channels, reporting to the Nyakabande transit center for screening and obtaining refugee permits.
Highlighting potential risks, Sebyala also cautioned business people involved in cross-border trade to exercise caution, as their safety may be compromised, leading to severe consequences.
Furthermore, Sebyala urged the public to stay vigilant during the festival season, emphasizing the presence of malicious individuals within society.
