JUNE 2024

Hey, Rise Up Community!

My name is Brianna Roe, but you can call me Bri. I am the Rise Up Training & Consulting Administrative Associate, and my role is all about keeping our team organized! Being part of this team brings me joy, as I believe in our impactful work of empowering youth-serving organizations to better serve their communities.

Speaking of empowerment - Let's talk about something that really excites me: DISC assessments with RUTC! Why is this a big deal? DISC is a useful behavior assessment tool for personal and professional development, catering to organizations, groups, teams, and individuals alike. DISC breaks down into four distinct behavior categories: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. Each behavior offers unique insights into interacting and communicating within various contexts.

To dive a little deeper, there are two behavioral styles the DISC Assessment focuses on, our Adaptive style and our Natural style:

  • Our Adaptive Style reflects the behavioral expectations we set for ourselves in professional settings, guiding how we interact with others

  • Our Natural Style represents our authentic selves

Learning about my own Natural and Adaptive behavior styles was very enlightening. As shown on the scale below, the highest plot points for my Natural Style are Conscientiousness (analytical and diplomatic) and Steadiness (friendly and understanding). When my Adaptive Style kicks in, my plotting point for Conscientiousness increases by 20%, and my Influence behaviors (optimism and enthusiasm) increase by almost 60%.

That’s HUGE!

A 20% discrepancy between the Natural and Adaptive styles may indicate that you carry stress caused by adapting to your various environments. My results were accurate; I had so much stress in my life!  My problem stemmed from the belief that I needed to please everyone around me by conforming to what I thought they wanted me to be. The expectations I set for myself were extremely unrealistic. I was putting too much effort into convincing the world that I was this happy-go-lucky person when it didn’t fully align with my authentic self. I am friendly and compassionate in my Natural Style, but I also value professionalism, organization, and attention to detail.

Unpacking my DISC assessment also taught me how to discover the behavioral styles of others and how to better communicate with those styles. For example, my hubby falls in the Steadiness category of the DISC scale, and even though I also exhibit Steadiness behaviors, my predominant style is Conscientiousness. So, when communicating with him, I must be direct yet open and welcome him to do the same. Knowing this information is so helpful to our communication skills as a married couple. Now we have room for productive conversations, clear intention-setting, and fewer conflicts.

I share all this with you because it is important to recognize that many struggle to be their true selves in the workplace and personal lives. Learning about your communication and behavioral style is not something you have to navigate independently - we want to help!
