Nov/Dec Newsletter - volunteers, elections & Christmas trees!

International Volunteer Day

Tuesday 5 December is International Volunteer Day - a day to celebrate and promote volunteering. The theme of the day is “If Everyone Did”

If everyone volunteered, the world would be a better place.  Imagine more than eight billion of us volunteering. Limitless possibilities for sustainable development – food and education for everyone, clean environment and good health, inclusive and peaceful societies, and more.

Nearly 6 million people across Australia volunteer through an organisation annually. This is almost one third of people aged 15 years and over.

✴️ We thank and acknowledge the thousands of volunteers in Mackellar for their contribution and service.

✴️Looking for volunteer opportunities? Check out www.govolunteer.com.au

✴️Interested in volunteering with Voices of Mackellar on our Committee or in another way? Head to our website for more information.

✴️Is your volunteer organisation looking for funding? A Grant writing workshop is being held on 4 December in the electorate office of Dr. Sophie Scamps MP. See more here.

Recommendations on Parliamentary Inquiry on Electoral Matters

After a year of public consultation (including submissions from people in Mackellar) and detailed consideration by the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Matters it has released its report and 21 recommendations on a range on measures to improve the federal electoral system. Importantly, the Australian Democracy Network states that  ‘...most of the recommendations are constructive, if a little light on detail. If applied properly in legislation, the reforms could expose hidden money in our political system, and tackle dangerous misinformation once and for all.’

You can read the full Report here .

Christmas Tree Anxiety?

Not sure whether to get a real or fake Christmas tree this year? We came across this article from The Regenerators on the environmental pros and cons of various Christmas Trees. Read on here

And on that note…. Voices of Mackellar thanks you for your interest, support and participation over 2023. We wish you a safe and restful Christmas and New Year. We will be taking a bit of a break as well and be back on deck by early February 2024.

HELP US ENGAGE MORE AUSTRALIANS IN THEIR DEMOCRACY
