Breathwork at Home Three Breathwork Techniques to Improve Overall Well-being |
Many clients are taking advantage of virtual Breathwork during this winter season. Wondering if it is for you? Explore the three Breathwork techniques below to improve your overall well-being. Breathwork should always be done sitting with a straight back or lying down on a flat surface with knees slightly bent. 1. Belly Breathing: Calming and nourishing. Increases relaxation, decreases cortisol. Place one hand on your upper chest and the other on your belly. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing the air to expand your belly. As you exhale through your nose, gently suck in your abdominal muscles. Envision a baby's belly rising on the inhale, falling on the exhale. 2. Box Breathing: Calms the mind, regulates emotions, and reduces stress. Begin by inhaling for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Exhale for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 4 seconds. 3. 4-7-8 Breathing: Tap into parasympathetic nervous system, deeply relaxing. Exhale fully to prepare. Inhale through the nose for a count of four, guiding the breath into the belly. Hold your breath at the top of the inhale for a count of seven. Exhale through pursed lips for a count of eight. *If new to Breathwork, please use caution. It is recommended to try one Breathing Technique at a time. Start with 2-3 attempts, or cycles, then slowly advance. | | |

Breathwork Immune Boosting Currently, many of us are dealing with Post COVID Syndrome and an immune system that has been compromised by grief and anxiety. Breathwork offers you the opportunity to boost your immunity by activating your parasympathetic nervous system. Our Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is made up of the sympathetic (fight/flight/freeze) and parasympathetic (rest/digest/renew) nervous systems. The ANS was once thought to be automatic, meaning we had no control over its functions, in other words- no control over our heart rate, our digestion, our hormonal release and our respiratory functioning. When we experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system sends signals to release a flash flood of hormones, increasing our heart rate and restricting blood flow while causing blood pressure to rise. All of these symptoms contributing to a weakened immune system. Cutting edge research reveals mind blowing evidence that we, in fact, do have control over our ANS! Research has proven the only way to impact the Autonomic Nervous System is through Conscious Breathing. Conscious Breathing activates our parasympathetic system restoring balance to the ANS. This indicates body and mind are indeed, one interconnected system. Like the heart pumps blood around the body, deep, conscious breaths pumps lymph fluid lowering cortisol in our body. Conscious Breathing lowers blood pressure, clears mucus and debris from the respiratory tract, thus improving immunity. Go ahead, take a few conscious breaths! Meditation Not Your Thing? Out With the Old, In With the New Those who have found meditation challenging, are taking delight in the restorative practice of Breathwork. In fact, Breathwork has become the newest well-being practice in 2022! Participating in Breathwork initiates a relaxation response in our bodies, and these physiological changes have a measurable impact on our physical, mental and spiritual state. Many of us run around with a never-ending to-do list or allow our minds to control the depiction of ourselves. Breathwork allows you to escape your mind through rhythmic breathing, naturally taking you to a meditative state. In this meditative state, you connect to your inner-layer, reaffirming who you truly are. This moment of stillness and connection allows you to narrow down what is really important to you, shortening many of those tasks you think you need to accomplish. Breathwork participants state, "I've struggled with meditation for years, but my mind was always racing and by the end, I wouldn't really feel any different. But when I discovered Breathwork, I felt present, and like my entire physiology changed. " Other Participants Experienced: Increased energy Boosted immune system Transformation of negative emotions and thoughts Reduction of stress and anxiety Improved cardiovascular health Gained clarity & focus Improved attention deficit challenges States of Awakened & Alertness Source: Breath Hub & The Globe and Mail |
