Woodworkers Club News

May 2023

Woodworkers Club Officers:  President: Sandy McKinnis, Vice President: Jim Powell; Secretary open, Board Members: Bill Poole, Chris Gullet, Bob Lackey, Kaeli Stangl, Alan Peck, and Larry Holman

It is with sad hearts that we announce the death of Gordon Rosser.  Gordon was an enthusiastic and fabulous scroller.  Our condolences go out to his family.  Cards can be mailed to:  The Prosser Family, 1619 Otter Dr., Anchorage, Alaska 99504.

NEW TIME: Our monthly meetings will now start at 7 p.m. on the second Tues. of the month from Sept. to May.   We continue to meet in the training center room at the AIH on Dimond and the Old Seward Hwy.  Please enter by the door near the Duluth Trading Company.

The May 9th monthly meeting will feature master woodworker and furniture designer Mark Wedekind.  Mark will share his expertise with complex jointery, including how incorporated rocks and other neat stuff into furniture.  You don’t want to miss this!!

New Shop Space:  Construction on our new shop space at the Commercial drive AIH will start soon.  We are being given approximately 1500 square feet of space in their store.  We will have our own entrance and will be able to meet after store hours for classes and meetings.  This new space will enable us to have bigger classes, more storage, and hopefully more tools.  MANY, MANY THANKS TO AIH!!!!!!!!

New Program: The first Sat of every month will now be open shop/WOODWORKING Saturday.  This open shop program will be from 10-4p.m.  Larry, Holman, Jim Powell, Alan Peck and Sandy Mckinnis have volunteered to staff our shop area during this time to help folks with projects. We are planning to continue it through next year.  If you would like to serve as a shop monitor please call Sandy Mckinnis @ 907-562-3994.  We welcome your help.

Please Note:  If you want to use the shop you need to sign up on the website as we can only have a maximum of 4 students in the shop on each date.

Update From the Scrollers:

As spring slowly comes into view the scroll clubs are winding down. The Anchorage club met on the 15th. They discussed the future of the club. No decisions were made.

It is with saddened hearts we announce that Gordon Rosser passed away on April 23rd. He truly found joy in scrolling and in being a part of the scroll club.

The Valley club met on the 22nd. We were learning the techniques of intarsia/segmentation. The Puffins were a fun, but challenging project. The completed mouse projects from last month were brought for show n tell. It was fun to see these completed projects.

There will be no meetings of either club in May.

Mark your calendars for the State Fair in August. We will once again be demonstrating and we hope everyone will give us a hand.

Hope you have a wonderful summer. We'll see you in August.

Happy Scrolling!

Carvers

Carvers will be meeting May 13th and 27th. May 27th will be the last meeting of the season so come join us. No meetings over the summer. We will start back up Sept 9th.

The State Fair comes up in August. Enter your projects and you can win some money.
