Did you know that the same virus that causes chickenpox also causes shingles? It's called the varicella zoster virus. Chickenpox is usually a milder illness that affects children, whereas shingles results from a reactivation of the virus later on in life.

The shingles vaccine is effective at reducing the chance of painful body & face rashes (known as shingles) and long term nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). If you have had the chickenpox in the past then the varicella zoster virus remains in your nerve cells and could reactivate causing shingles.
