May Newsletter

Happy May warriors! We hope you're all having a great month filled with joy and sunshine. May was filled with some wonderful days of awareness, which we will get into detail about below. We have our Chronic Illness in the News segment, along with some other great information. Let's get started!

Lupus Awareness Month

Lupus is an autoimmune chronic illness. Lupus causes inflammation in the body resulting in severe pain. Lupus is most commonly found in the heart, kidneys, skin, and joints. However, Lupus can be found almost anywhere in the body,  making it a common illness but also a very dangerous one. Lupus is mostly found in women. In fact, nine out of ten people with Lupus are women.

The color of Lupus Awareness Month is purple, and purple was seen lots this past month of May, especially in our Fight Like A Warrior community.

Chronic Illness In The News

Welcome back to our Chronic Illness In The News segment. We are expanding this segment further! If you have an article you came across yourself which you really enjoyed and want to see it in this segment, we want you to share it with us!  We want to hear your thoughts and opinions about the articles we post in this segment, and get a discussion going! (Thoughts and opinions can be about an article you came across, or about one you saw here!) This is a great way to connect with people within your community and a chance to have your voice be heard! You can send the articles and thoughts to our Newsletter Coordinator Megan, at megan.bocchinfuso@fightlikeawarrior.org with the subject line "Chronic illness in the news."

Meet Gigi Robinson, the First SI Swimsuit Model Who Openly Battles Chronic Illness

The word Gigi Robinson keeps coming back to is "surreal." It's surreal to be a model in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, surreal to see the photos finally hit the internet on May 16 (with newsstands to follow on May 19), and surreal to become the first model with a publicly shared chronic illness to be featured in the magazine.

When I Realized Life With Chronic Illness Can Be Hard and Good at the Same Time

Recently, one of my friends was complaining about our job. And I responded, yes, it's hard, but I love it. And she was shocked. We often discuss challenges and frustrations about our job, and I feel like I'm usually overwhelmed by the amount of work that I still need to do.

Lyme Disease Awareness Month

Lyme Disease Awareness Month was a worldwide recognition of Lyme disease over the month of May.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne bacterial infectious disease. Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed because its symptoms are similar to other diseases. Also, Lyme disease often mirrors other diseases, therefore making diagnosis that much more difficult.

Warrior Of The Month

Jenna

Meet our Warrior of the Month, Jenna!

Jenna was diagnosed with psoriasis when she was 11 years old. During her treatment for this she was diagnosed with three more illnesses: arthritis, scoliosis and hyper mobility spectrum disorder.

Jenna battled struggles receiving her necessary medication with her insurance company for years. Jenna also faced extreme bullying as a child for hair loss.
Jenna now is in remission for her psoriasis, while still facing pain daily. Jenna refuses to let her diagnosis define her.
