from dropoff to new "digs"...

hats off to you, starters!

If your starts could talk, Starters, they’d thank you for all those weeks of care you gave them, seeding, watering, fostering, singing, reading to (you know who you are) and preparing them for their new "digs." But since they can’t, we will!

We are SO grateful for every single one of you volunteer home gardeners—new to getstarted and returning from last year—who dedicated your time and talents to growing a whopping 400 Start Kits!

It was great seeing you all at DropOff Days and hearing your stories about your experience and your gardens. Christine C. bonded so much with her starts, she had a hard time saying goodbye, but, as you can see, she eventually hugged, kissed and wished them well in their journey. And what a journey it was…

on the road again...

Since Starters dropped off their kits, a small but mighty crew has continued to primp and preen, getting the kits picture perfect for the next leg of their journey—packed up and brought to pantries for sharing with under resourced neighbors.

Last week, a bevy of beauties like these were paired with appreciative “Grower” families and individuals at three outdoor food pantries: Salvation Army and McDowell Elementary School in East Petaluma and Elisha’s Pantry in Santa Rosa.

This week, the hits keep on comin’ as we bring even more starts out to Una Vida’s Community Market in East Petaluma and West Side Interfaith Panty at Elim Lutheran.

this smile says it all.

Perla was all smiles despite the super windy day after she handpicked her Start Kit of summer squash, cucumbers and beans. Alex loved his kit so much he wanted to keep it in his room, but mom Val explained its need for sunshine and made him promise he’d water it every other day. Rose was all about the tomatoes, for eating off the vine or making into sauce or ketchup.

We enjoyed so many great conversations with people, young and younger, experienced and new to growing, all curious about the plants.

Of course, we let them know they were all tended lovingly by YOU, their neighbors, and distributed bilingual growing instructions to help them “getstarted.”

Stay tuned for more stories about their progress!
