May Events BESA Meeting Our Spring Quarter meetings will be held via Zoom. Add the dates to your calendar via this link. May 7, 2020 1:00 p.m. Jun 11, 2020 1:00 p.m. Here's the link to the Zoom meetings: https://ucdaviscoe.zoom.us/j/160916682 Please join us if you can! Virtual BMEGG Research Symposium Friday, May 29th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Zoom This event will feature student research talks, rapid-fire talks, and a career panel. A full schedule will be sent out once it has been finalized. Students can submit abstracts by Monday, May 18, by filling out this form. Professors and post docs willing to judge student presentations can email Marissa Gionet Gonzales. Additional questions can be directed to Emmet Francis or Liz Li. Student Seminar Series Remember to fill out this survey by the end of the day on May 1 if you're planning a qualifying exam in the next year. BESA can offer a place to practice as well as examples to learn from. Are you interested in practicing your QE presentation to get feedback and QE tips from peers? SARS-CoV-2 Updates Yolo County now requires face coverings in public spaces As of April 27, Yolo County now requires residents to cover their faces when in public spaces, such as grocery stores and pharmacies. Everyone should still practice social distancing when possible. More info here. Shelter in place extended to May 31 The Yolo County shelter in place order has been extended through May, according to the Yolo County website. Some items, such as golf courses and fishing, are released from the order. Visit the website for updates on the Roadmap to Recovery. |

Announcements and Awards Congratulations to Randy Carney and his lab on the new R01! The Carney Lab just received a $2.5 million NIH R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to build a diagnostic tool for multiplexed detection of tumor extracellular vesicles using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We're excited to see the work that comes out of this! Congratulations to Amy Becker for being awarded the Floyd and Mary Schwall Dissertation Fellowship! This is a 12-month fellowship for continuing UC Davis students who are engaged in medically related research with a human focus. Recipients receive a $5000 research/travel allowance. This funding will start in Fall 2020, and she is excited to use it for research and traveling to conferences next year. Congratulations to Erkin Şeker on receiving the 2020 Graduate Studies Distinguished Graduate and Postdoctoral Mentorship Award! Dr. Şeker's current and past graduate students and postdoctoral mentees nominated him for his multi-faceted efforts in mentoring the trainees in his research group, vitalizing the ECE GSA, advising graduate students on professional and personal matters, developing a new course to guide incoming ECE graduate students, and leading university-wide collaborations to develop novel mentorship approaches. Read what his nominators had to say here. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor! Congratulations to Erkin Şeker and his team on receiving an NIH R21 Grant! Please join us in congratulating Prof. Erkin Şeker in collaboration with Prof. Maria Marco (Food Science and Technology) and Prof. Helen Reybould (School of Veterinary Medicine) on receiving an NIH R21 award, entitled "A Microfabricated Model of Enteric Epithelium-Neuron Interaction for Studying the Influence of Bacterial Metabolites," funded by National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). May is Mental Health Awareness Month! In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, BESA Health would like to highlight some special virtual events we are attending or organizing. We hope you'll consider joining us! - Monday, May 4, 4:15 - 5 p.m.: Meditation Monday
- UC Davis Safety Services is offering these live Mindfulness Meditation sessions weekly, Mon-Thurs. Join us to explore these meditations on Monday, May 4, and, if you find it useful, consider continuing to the daily sessions online. Register and find more information here.
- Saturday, May 9, 3 - 5 p.m.: BESA Book Club
- This will be our second BESA Health Book Club meeting, this time held via Zoom. We will focus on the second section of The Book of Joy, entitled "The Obstacles to Joy" (p 81-189 in the normal edition). If you are interested in joining, send an email to Emmet to be added to the list. And mark your calendars for our final meeting on the remainder of the book, taking place on Saturday, June 6 from 3-5 p.m.

- UC Davis is offering a 5-part Yoga series via Zoom! May 21 will be the 4th session, which we are planning ahead to join in on, but feel free to join for any or all of the sessions (Thursdays from April 30 to May 28). Register and find more information here!

While all in-person events have been canceled, BMEGG has been able to carry on virtually with weekly seminars, thesis defenses, and even some student-faculty socials. At the end of this month, we'll be holding our biggest virtual event so far - the BMEGG Research Symposium. Looking forward to as many people joining in as possible! |
