Our Students of the Month! |

Yukishiro A word from Yukishiro's owner: We got Yukishiro from Northwood, Ohio, and he didn’t do well on the car ride home. Yuki was 16 weeks old when we started DSU. He has a great, very chill personality. He loves people and his two siblings at home. However, it was difficult getting him near the vehicle, let alone in it. He’d hunker down and wouldn’t budge. We’d have to pick him up and carry him into the car. After the Intermediate Obedience class with Miss. Karen, she suggested a Confidence Building class. Wow, after that class with Miss. Amber, he’s learned to try and not be afraid of new experiences. He steps up to the vehicle, but we still have to pick up his back end to give him a “leg up”. Yuki’s personality and demeanor would make him a great therapy canine. DSU will help us get there. He just turned 1 year old and can’t wait to see what more DSU will bring out in him. A word from our Trainer, Mary K. Bilkie: Yukishiro’s easy-going, peaceful demeanor makes him a joy to work with. Each week he shows up with an eagerness to work with me and his owner Frost. He is making great strides in his training from week to week. One of Yukishiro’s aspirations is to become a therapy dog and there is not a doubt in my mind that he will achieve his goal and become a fantastic therapy dog and bring much happiness to everyone he meets! |

Lucy A word from Lucy's owner: We adopted Lucy 6 months ago from Empathy for Animals after she was rescued by Animal Charity from a hoarding situation. While she bonded with me right away, she was initially somewhat afraid of my husband, would hide from my mom (her Grammie), had separation anxiety and wasn’t fully house trained. Medically, we were continuing what her foster started in healing her skin issues and getting her back to a healthy weight. After consulting with Jenny, establishing some routines to help her feel more secure, and starting into a Beginner Obedience class with Karen Becker, we noticed her growing more comfortable with us. She now goes for car rides with her Grammie & has met all of her church friends, she tackles Joe for belly scratches every night, her zoomies are legendary and no more accidents in the house! We’re now enrolled in Confidence Building with Jenny to help grow her confidence and strengthen our bond with her. She’s really the silliest, sweetest girl-we love her like crazy and look forward to seeing her really grow into her full personality! |

5 Ways to Have a Dog-Friendly Halloween |
|
|
1. Safe Dog Costumes: Ensure a snug, comfortable fit to avoid choking and irritation. Associate costume-wearing with positive experiences like treats or walks. Avoid easily detachable accessories to prevent accidental ingestion. 2. Halloween Night Caution: Avoid taking pets trick-or-treating to prevent stress from crowds and costumes. If you do, ensure they wear visible, reflective clothing and use a short leash. 3. Beware of Halloween Candy: Keep all candies and snacks away from pets to avoid health issues. Stick to safe treats like fresh pumpkin (ensure it’s not moldy). 4. Party Precautions for Pets: Isolate pets in a quiet room with treats and toys during festivities. Consider calming solutions for anxious pets, consulting with your vet if needed. 5. Pet-Friendly Decorations: Opt for LED lights in Jack-o-Lanterns to prevent burns and fire hazards. Ensure decorations, especially LEDs and glow sticks, are out of pets’ reach. Keep Halloween Happy and Safe for Your Pets! 🎃🐾 Ensure costumes are comfy and safe, be cautious on Halloween night, safeguard sweets, manage pet anxiety during parties, and choose safe decorations. Have a spooktacular time with your furry friends! |

WOOF Pupsicle and Treat Tray The No-Mess Dog Puzzle: The Pupsicle is an interactive dog toy that opens in the middle for easy filling and cleaning, making it a top choice among mentally stimulating toys for dogs. Simply unscrew the lid, add a pre-made treat, and hand it to your pup! A word from our Trainer, Mary K. Bilkie: The reason I love this treat dispenser is because it keeps dogs mentally stimulated for quite a while. Although the summer months are behind us, having a cool treat is almost always welcome. I also love that you can make your own healthy treats to fill it. |

HETOO Interactive Dog Toy Treat Ball This dog toy can train the dog's brain to develop its intelligence. By adding snacks to the game time, they are learning how to roll the ball to get treats to fall out. This will increase their enthusiasm for learning! The ideal toy for most breeds of dogs for outdoor playing, training, chewing. |

Get Control - $160 This is an impulse control class. Many dogs cannot control their arousal levels in certain situations. This, for example, can result in barking when they see other dogs or people. You could also have dogs who jump on people, pester their owners for attention, put their paws on counters, steal things, and pull on their leash. Dogs are born with poor self-control, and it is up to us to teach them! This class works on teaching dogs' patience, how to calm our dogs down when they get excited, and how to help them remain in an overall more relaxed state of mind. View our upcoming Get Control classes below: Thursday 10/17/24 @ 10:45 AM in Poland - Dee Sunday 10/20/24 @ 12:00 PM in Poland - Dee Tuesday 10/22/24 @ 7:00 PM in NW - Jenny Monday 10/28/24 @ 5:45 PM in Warren - Heather C Tuesday 10/29/24 @ 7:00 PM in Poland - Dee Saturday 11/2/24 @ 11:30 AM in Poland - Jenny Tuesday 11/12/24 @ 5:45 PM in NW - Jenny Thursday 12/5/24 @ 10:45 AM in Poland - Dee Sunday 12/15/24 @ 3:45 PM in Hermitage - Matthew

Private Training Sessions Privates can be done for specific behavior issues such as but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression or if basic training (obedience/manners) is desired. The initial private session is 90 minutes long. Based upon the information provided to us on our behavior history form, we will prepare a preliminary plan. Upon arrival, we will first observe the situation, implement management changes and teach new skills sets. After the visit, we will provide a typed Behavior Treatment Plan for you to keep and use as a blueprint to work from. For any behavior issues, we will also send letter to your Veterinarian (if you approve) to advise them of our observations and our plan moving forward. We will work closely with your veterinarian in cases that require this. The plan will be adjusted accordingly based upon our observations and may be further adjusted as we discuss progress in the weeks ahead. You will have access to us for the lifetime of your pet after your visit via phone, text or email for any questions and/or concerns. We request you provide us updates weekly or however often is needed via phone, email or text. If you attend a private session at our facility, we do require your dog to be vaccinated with the following: Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper and a negative fecal. |
