Stop the Anti-Gun Train Before We Get Run Over

“To promote, protect and preserve the firearms industry”

The anti-gun train is once again picking up steam in New Mexico. The governor’s two month plus health order against guns in Bernalillo County is still in effect. She has announced that she wants to ban “assault” weapons, put a 14 day waiting period in place for firearm purchases and increase the age to buy a long gun to 21. She wants to do all of this during the next legislative session which begins on Jan 16, 2024. There is support for all of these measures in the house and senate. The Bernalillo County DA also recently expressed his support for an “assault” weapons ban and magazine limits, although he couldn’t define what an “assault” weapon is. The Santa Fe mayor has announced plans to get a state constitution change to end preemption which would allow counties and local communities to pass their own regulations regarding firearms possession.

NMFIA members have been contacting legislators to express the industry’s opposition to all of these upcoming proposals. Some members have attended fund raisers and legislators have been invited to and attended NMFIA monthly meetings. The Association is also researching legislators who are on the fence regarding firearms issues as potential candidates for donations and meetings.

We all know how to be armed and prepared to defend ourselves and families from an attacker, in this fight being well armed means being educated and informed. The difference between the two is this fight has already started and now is time to take action and get in front of the anti-gun train and stop it before it runs us over!

As someone in the firearms industry, stay informed about what is happening locally and state wide. Inform you customers about current and proposed rules, regulations and legislation. Contact your elected officials and let them know you are a business owner and object to the anti-firearms proposals and that you employ people from the community and provide revenue to the community and state. In general, you also speak for the majority of your customer base as they hold similar opinions and beliefs as you. Encourage your customers to contact their elected officials to express their concerns. Even if an official is anti-gun, contacting them will let them know the position of their constituents. With enough people contacting an official it may be enough to sway an opinion.

Consider joining NMFIA or making a donation. We can’t keep defeating the anti-gunners unless we are organized and put forth a united effort. On November 14, 2023 alone the KOB website had four articles regarding firearms and they all had an anti-gun slant. Lack of action on our part will make New Mexico mirror San Francisco where all gun stores have been forced out of business.

Give customers access to literature about pro gun organizations, NRA, NMSSA, FPC, GOA, NMFIA, to name a few. Encourage them to join or get on mailing lists for these organizations. We have a strong voice in New Mexico, we need use it and speak up!

Thank you for your donations and support. Consider an additional donation to assist with our upcoming lobbying efforts in Santa Fe. CLICK HERE
