Hello, from the LANCE Trust’s small but busy team! We really appreciate your support: signing up to our newsletter, following our Facebook page and helping out with volunteering. Our mission, as ever, is to maintain and increase biodiversity in and around Long Ashton.

🤝 Three ways to get involved with local wildlife this Autumn...

1. Join a LANCE riverfly monitor to survey a local stream:
Some of the LANCE Trustees have become certified
riverfly monitors and are taking monthly samples from waterways around Long Ashton to survey for for invertebrates (pictured above). Email us if you would like to accompany us on a survey - all ages welcome.

2. Set up a bat detector for the North Somerset Bat survey:
If you act quickly, you can still take part in the survey. You'll be given a fascinating bat detector and guided through the set up and data collection. The survey period closes on the 8th November.
More information here.

3. Build a nest box for spring's returning swifts:
Our swift project kicked off this summer and was a success! We'd like to make the project bigger and better next year, which will involve installing more
boxes in swift hot-spots around the village. Email us if you think you could contribute a box.

Here's what else has been happening in the area and keeping LANCE busy!

🌳 Notice This Tree

Did you spot any trees with this curious banner around Bristol this month? Notice This Tree is a campaign to draw attention to the desecration of nature through creative projects such as short films and a touring collaborative tapestry.

🦇 North Somerset bat survey

We've been setting up bat detectors around the parish for the Bat Conservation Research Lab's project with NS. It's a fun and fascinating way to learn about our local species. You can still get involved but there's just two weeks left!

🏢 EPIC planning application

It's now over a year since the proposal was first submitted. The NS planning portal says Determination Deadline is the 31st October, and it looks likes you can still leave a second comment and objection (because they resubmitted their application) if you haven't already.

🌳 Hedge planting success

We've run a few maintenance days to look after the newly-planted hedgerow which has established well. (A big thanks to all involved!) Keep an eye out for the saplings on your walks and let us know if you spot any that need attention.
