Restoration in Permaculture

Permaculture is all about RESTORATION! We restore soils, we restore biodiversity, we restore ecosystems, we restore our neighborhoods, we restore cultural practices.

We restore our ecologies and our abilities to live in equitable, respectful, life-affirming, and sustainable ways for the longevity of our earth and lineages to come.

Towards the goals of cultural restoration we have monthly potlucks celebrating the cultural heritage of people. On December 10th we celebrate the multicultural holidays during the winter such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Christmas and Las Posadas.

This celebration is a "co-creation" meaning that everyone who comes brings a cultural tradition to share with others. It could be food, music, craft, toy, prayer, decor, or other cultural practice. Your presence is what makes the celebration come alive.

Native American Heritage Month means DeColonizing Thanksgiving

Instep with BIONEERS commitment, we want to "de-colonize" Thanksgiving and restore a true history of Native Peoples here in America.

In 2016, Bioneers made a commitment to decolonize Thanksgiving, by recognizing and sharing the truth of what this holiday means for Native Americans and all Americans.

Here are three new traditions that you can adopt to begin to decolonize Thanksgiving.

1. Combat erasure by telling the real story of Thanksgiving around the table. There’s an article in the link below to get you started.

2. Re-center Thanksgiving by serving locally sourced food. Your local farmers market is a great place to find locally grown foods.

3. Address oppression by widening your circle. Ask someone outside your usual group of friends and family what Thanksgiving means to them.

Join the movement to celebrate the real history of Thanksgiving, start conversations with your family and friends, and create new traditions.

Decolonizing Permaculture

The SLO Permaculture Guild has the goal of decolonizing our thoughts and actions. Our mission statement: We look to preserve the natural and cultural heritages of our families, local native peoples and local ecosystems. We are anchored by the permaculture principles to find solutions to creating sustainable societies, economies and systems.Towards that goal we have a land acknowledgement on our website: https://slopermaculture.weebly.com/

We look to creating more partnership with local indigenous peoples causes and projects in 2024.

One such project is to support Our Roots, Our Routes. Please donate to their living history project on Giving Tuesday.

Our Roots Our Routes: Living Histories of Belonging and Cultural Sustainability on the Central Coast is a multi-faceted project to gather the untold stories and document the varied cultural practices of our Indigenous, immigrant and ethnic communities, on their terms. Our vision is to create a greater sense of place-based belonging, representation, and connection among all Central Coast communities.

College Corps Members at Our Global Family Farm

We are quite blessed to have Cal Poly student interns working to restore our permaculture demonstration farm, Our Global Family Farm, on Sundays. You can be part of the restoration on Sundays.

Come and meet Grace, Mahnoor, Giselle and Sandra when they come to work on the farm Sundays, 9am to 12noon. Each week we have a hands-on lesson in permaculture farming techniques such as building compost piles, planting cover crop seeds, planting companion plants, and harvesting.

We give away produce every Sunday to the community meal provided by Food Not Bombs at Mitchelle Park.
