Happy New Year from all of us at the Afghan Women Centre of Montreal (AWCM)! After celebrating TWENTY YEARS of milestones and achievements in serving our community and fulfilling our mission of empowering racialized and immigrant women this past December, our work doesn't stop there.

This year we are back with new, fresh, and innovative ideas to serve our community better. We will work above and beyond our mission to advocate for women's rights and equality both inside and outside Canada. For now, please take a look at our January Newsletter, which recaps all the exciting events we organized as well as a glimpse into the coming activities we have planned for next month.

Past Events and Activities

Global Movement for Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

IN PERSON: On January 14, across 45 cities and 23 countries worldwide across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, we, along with Montrealers, participated in the global protests for Women's Rights in Afghanistan under the movement #LETAFGHANGIRLSLEARN after the ban on attending secondary schools and universities as of December 20.

The current ban on women and girls attending educational institutions, implemented just last month, is the straw that broke the camel's back.

The Afghan Women Centre stands in solidarity with the women and young girls in Afghanistan whose fundamental right to education is being violated.

We must continue amplifying Afghan women's voices and alert the attention of Thank you to everyone who came out in support - despite the cold and helped make posters and signs. You are essential to raising awareness and keeping the voices in Afghanistan alive and seen in the eyes of international communities.

Providing Newcomers with Resources

IN PERSON: The AWCM team was pleased to provide newly arrived refugees with the necessary resources to ensure their smooth integration and resettlement into Quebec society. The AWCM is proud to be one of the first points of contracts for refugees and migrants entering Quebec society. Thank you for your continuous trust in us! Community, please give a big welcome to the newly arrived Afghan families!

Volunteer Fair

IN PERSON: We were pleased to be one of the 40 community organizations invited to share more about our team and our work at Concordia’s volunteer fair on February 2nd.

A big thank you to all who visited our booth and engaged with our team. Your passion for our cause really warms our hearts.

FGM is a serious problem that has affected more than 200 million women and girls across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and it’s time we put an end to a practice that is deeply rooted in gender inequality and power imbalances between men and women.
