for Your International Teaching Job Search

Before You Sign: I am happy to say that many of my clients are starting to get offers for the Summer of 2023. A few of them are getting multiple offers and are needing to make a choice. Whether you have one or several offers, I always recommend creating a PROS and CONS list, looking first at the city and then at the job, viewing them as separate entities. This will help you consider both your personal and professional life. It can also help you with any clarifying, follow-up questions for the HR department or Head of School.

Questions to consider when creating your PROS and CONS list: 

City -

  • Cost of Living: rent? utilities? food? transportation? entertainment?

  • Environment: nature? pollution? political situation? safety? health? physical activities?

  • Airport: frequency of flights? destinations?

  • Weather: seasons? average temperatures?

  • Residence: on-campus housing? city centre? suburbs?

  • Commute: public transportation? school transportation? cycling or walking? taxis?

  • Entertainment: restaurants? bars? cinemas? concerts? theatre? festivals?

  • Friendships: expat groups? locals? church? learning the language? visits from friends?

 Job -

  • Benefits: salary? housing? medical insurance? PD? shipping? retirement? raises?

  • Type of School: international vs local staff & students? non-profit or for-profit?

  • Work conditions: curriculum? classroom? facilities? support? colleagues? supervisor?

  • Schedule: daily hours? # of classes? # of students? meetings? after school? weekends?
