A New Spring Training Regime!

March/April Newsletter

Even though the Canadian Aviation Regulations Recency Requirements (CAR 401.05) states:

“Notwithstanding any other provision of this Subpart, no holder of a flight crew permit, licence or rating, shall exercise the privileges of the permit, licence or rating unless;the holder has acted as pilot-in-command or co-pilot of an aircraft within the five years preceding the flight;"

I would strongly suggest that individuals who hold Helicopter or Fixed Wing priveledges, continue to read further in CAR 401.05 and reflect on “(b)” of the regulation:

“(b) within the 12 months preceding the flight; (i) the holder has completed a flight review, in accordance with the personnel licensing standards, conducted by the holder of a flight instructor rating for the same category of aircraft,”

Pilots who are actively flying commercially have to complete a "Flight Review" or annual recurrent training both on the ground and in the air for the category of aircraft they are going to fly. Would it not be prudent for Private Pilots adopt the same protocol?

For the most part, in the commercial world, annual recurrent training takes place during the spring months prior to the busy summer season. If Private Pilots adopt this mind set; every spring complete emergency procedures training for the category of aircraft you fly; you will have peace of mind and your friends and family will feel a lot safer knowing you complete annual training. As well; you comply with CAR 401.05 and you may see a decrease in your insurance rates. Let your Broker know you take part in an annual recurrent training program and you may see a reduction in your insurance rate come renewal time.

Contact a flight instructor who holds a rating for the same category of aircraft you fly. Have them give you a few hours of ground school and a couple of hours of recurrent emergency flight training. You will maintain your skills, and you will notice that you become more proficient in carrying out emergency procedures. Let’s face it; we all can fly straight and level; but when the proverbial “shit” hits the fan, it is nice to know you will be able to handle any emergency as well as you did when you first received your flying privileges. So let's start a "New Spring Training Regime" Today!
