We have teamed up with Harlow printing and healthcare to produce our awareness cards to be inserted into the Personal Child Health Record, the red book that is given to every baby in the United Kingdom shortly after birth.
The cards need to be rquested as each region orders more stock, but over the next 12 months, we will see a roll out nationally to as many areas as possible. This will be done at no extra cost to the health teams ordering the books, and costs will be covered by the Grace Kelly Ladybird Trust so we have a lot of work to do in terms of fundraising, but this truly could save lives.
We are now working hard to ensure that each region is aware of the availability of these cards to ensure they reach the red books, and Harlow Printing is kindly helping with this by raising the topic every time a new order is placed, so the roll out has begun. Wilth over 900,000 children born in the UK every year, we could not have done this roll out logistically without the help of Harlow Printers, so we are very grateful for their help.
Other than accidents, childhood cancer is the number one cause of death of children in the UK. Despite this, often parents and clinicians are not aware of the signs and symptoms to look for and often there are delays in presentation and diagnosis. With almost 50% of cases of childhood cancer occurring in the under 5’s, teaching the signs and symptoms as part of the PCHR is invaluable to help save lives.
These cards have already been used by the Royal College of General Practice and also the Institute of Health Visitors to teach signs and symptoms to clinicians, health visitors and parents. These cards are designed to highlight the signs and symptoms of all childhood cancers on just one card making it practical and accessible advice for parents, with the potential to save many lives.
A big thank you to Harlow Printers, the Institute of Health Visitors and advice from the PHCR team for making this possible.
