January News 2024

Serving up all our latest updates!

ACES AND PLACES

• Condolences and love to Pat Hughes after the recent passing of her husband Dale. Dale was an exceptional sportsman, although not a tennis player as such. He put his hand up to run Sponsorship when the Club needed someone and did a fantastic job on the Board. He will be dearly missed by the whole Hensman Family.

•We are also saddened to announce the passing of John Clements, a well known and loved member of the Wednesday Men's Shed Social Play group. John played for many years, never letting his Multiple Sclerosis slow him down. Your absence will be felt, John.

• Aidan Chan is bringing home the Boys U12 Singles national crown after beating top seed Tommy Camus 6-1, 6-4 at the Australian Junior Championships! Other Hensman competitors included Karin Hiramatsu, Alice Stevens, Elijah Liu, Elena Manoj and Jovana Novakovic. Jay Fairclough made it through to the semi-finals and even got to partner Storm Hunter as a hitting buddy before her event!

• More awesome results from our Juniors: Hunter Kwietniewski-Lees came in runner up in the U12 Tier 2 City of Joondalup O3k J125 Sorrento Open & Junior Tournament in early January, then backed it up the following week taking out top honours at the BS U12 Tier 3 division at the JT Junior 125 at Applecross Tennis Club! Jaun Yum was overall runner up in the WS OS division at the same Sorrento tournament, Keefen Wilson was runner up in the Boys U14 Singles, and Brendan Chan took out the Boys U12 Doubles title, with Khristian Bacchelli-Khoo coming runner up.

The Applecross tournament also saw Addison Franklin win top honours in the Girls Special Division and the U14 Singles with runner up Chloe Tyers, Jash Sheth runner up in the Boys U10 Singles, Lucas McKenzie runner up in the BS U10 JDS, Keefen Wilson runner up in the Boys U14 Singles, Samson Armitage and Keisuke Kogo runners up in the U14/U16 Doubles, and Addison Franklin and Chloe Tyers teaming up to win the U14 Doubles.

Paige Connolly battled to victory in the East Fremantle Junior Classic GD U10 Greenball winning the Doubles Title, while Krish Govindarajan won the BS U10 Greenball division.

Jaiden Chandra won his draw and was overall runner up U14 Boys Singles at the Junior Grasscourt Tournament at Royal Kings Park, Khristian Bacchelli-Khoo won the U12 Singles and was runner up in the U18 JS G2, while Lucas McKenzie and Gabrielle Lombardi were runners up in the Boys and Girls U11 Greenball events, Julia Pedrini won the U14 division, Elena Manoj and Karin Hiramatsu were first and second in the Girls U14s, and in Doubles, Karin Hiramatsu took out the U14 PS Division with Addison Franklin and Elena Manoj teaming up for second place.

Among all these winners and runners up were dozens of other fantastic Hensman results. A huge congratulations to all juniors who competed in these tournaments: Kian Hiramatsu, Dhivyen Mannar, Kael Bacchelli-Khoo, Ethan Stonell, Jonah Stonell, Jacqueline Lombardi, Veronica Lombardi, Cooper Earl, Thomas McKenzie, Jake Rowley, Eva Lings, Finlay Bower, Audrina Marchesi-Nemeth, Sara Basse De Carvalho and Aedon Hoh, and good luck to all the kids heading to Busselton this week for the WA Junior Grasscourt Championships!

(Apologies if I have left anyone out, it was an extensive list!!)

• Our Women's State League players haven't been resting on their laurels during the season break. Alice Stevens has just competed at the Grade 1 Traralgon Championships - the warm-up event for the Junior Australian Open, and Ella Nurkic made the finals of the West Australian Grass Court Championships at Mount Lawley.

• An impressive Hensman contingent are currently competing in the 2024 Australian Seniors Championships in Tasmania... Keep an eye out in the February issue for a wrap up of the fun!

• Congratulations to Bob Wegner on celebrating his 80th birthday! Looking forward to the celebratory lunch, Bob!

• Lots of our Hensman family have been travelling over the Christmas period. Ksenija Vujacic spent some relaxing time with family in Montenegro over Christmas, Peter and Sandy Cooke and Peter and Alis Woods enjoyed the sun in Busselton, Nic and Helen De Woolf are caravaning around Dunsborough, Peter Messer has been trekking the mountains in Japan and Mike McLean is off around Antarctica and South America. Safe travels everyone!

• Welcome home to Coralie and Doug Webster after their Christmas trip to Europe. Doug has been recuperating from Covid - Doug, ask Bruce Long for some tips - he's finally back on the court after suffering the same illness!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE!!

WELCOME TO 2024!

Welcome back to Hensman and here's to a great year of tennis!

May your serves be sizzling, your volleys vivacious and your backhands blistering!

Whether you're into competitive play, prefer a more relaxed social game or somewhere in between, we have something for you! This year, take the opportunity to get along to something new, and don't forget to try our Pickleball and Social Tennis programs.

Each year, we ask all our members to make some time to help out around the Club. As a predominantly volunteer-based organisation, we rely on our members to chip in here and there to keep our Club running smoothly and efficiently.

Please find some time, just an hour or two, to help out in a way that suits you: you can come along to one of our Busy Bees, join the Social Events Committee, help out on a Friday night or join the Saturday Social afternoon tea roster, manage a League team, or let us know of a skill you have that could benefit our Club!

And finally, a reminder that we are a welcoming and friendly Club with an excellent reputation.

Please remember your court etiquette at all times and be respectful and kind to other players, spectators and others around the Club.

You can refresh yourself on our Code of Conduct at any time on our website.

HENSMAN GOES TO THE UNITED CUP

Hensman members put in a great show at the recent United Cup at the State Tennis Centre.

Apparently people went to watch the tennis but most of the photos suggest otherwise...

Hensman highlights included Debbie Napier keeping the players in line as an official, FD as a volunteer court looker-afterer, a host of Hensman ball kids and Anna Kelly playing "Where's Wally" at every game!

TENNIS TRIVIA

Think your only surface choices are hard, grass or clay?

Think again...

Here are some of the alternatives, complete with pictures:

A skyscraper in Singapore, inside an Italian church, on the water in Dubai, streetside in Manhattan, a private island in Turks and Caicos, a mountaintop in Austria, the Scottish Highlands, a Barcelona Opera stage, a pool in Miami, in between the Hong Kong skyscrapers, a glacier in Argentina, inside a Parisian building, the Tanzanian Savannah, beachside on the Amalfi Coast, a tennis-pontoon on the Great Barrier Reef, a flying carpet in Qatar, the Arizona desert, a helipad in Dubai, the beach in Qatar, a dhow in Doha, half grass-half clay in Spain, on top of the MCG, the subway at Grand Central Station, and on an ocean liner in the Bahamas.

(This was really fun to research!)

MEMBER PROFILE

JODIE EVERETT

Jodie ticks all the boxes at Hensman - plays in League teams, comes to Cardio Tennis and she's even a Sponsor!

I have lived in South Perth for most of my life and am a regular Cardio Tennis and League player. I also sponsor the Club through my business and find it a great way to strengthen community ties and contribute to the well-being of the sports community in my area.
I love to spend my Januarys working at the Australian Open in Melbourne, one of my favourite events!

After opening a travel agency in Canning Vale in 1993, I decided to work from home in 1996 when I had my girls. I love all aspects of travel but specialise in cruising and luxury travel.

I accidentally ended up in travel after being transferred from Ernst & Young's Perth office to London back in 1987. They placed me in their travel department and the rest is history!

I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world; highlights include cruising the Arctic Circle, Douro River, Italy, Hawaii and even a trip to Wimbledon.

Travel can be amongst the best life experiences, but you need to be organised!

Researching and planning takes time and travelling to unfamiliar places can be daunting.

If you are nervous about booking online or lost amongst the mess of “deals” we see every day that hold hidden terms and extra charges, just get in contact and let me help you out!
