A glimmer caught Moses’ eye. And he turned to see the great wonder that was before him. The bush was aflame but not consumed. And then it called his name, "Moses! Moses!"

I love this scene in the Exodus story because it initiates the pivotal conversation between Moses and God where they behold one another. In this section, words like מראה/mareh/vision, ראה/roeh/see, ידעתי/yadati/know, and others indicate a deep sense of seeing of one another. Not in seeing in a physical sense, but seeing in terms of understanding one another's essence. To be seen. Known. Understood. Seeing the essence, potential, and future-- together.

The scene of the burning bush is a tender section of Torah where God and Moses agree to move forward together: Moses doing the will of God in boldly pursuing liberation for the Israelites, and God assuring him that help will be there when it is needed.

But the scene wasn't smooth. Even though Moses eventually acquiesced to God's calling him to leadership, he began by doubting his own ability to serve in that capacity. In two words, "מִ֣י אָנֹ֔כִי/mi anochi/who am I?", Moses questioned why God would single him out for this important post. In response, God exhibited empathy, compassion, lovingkindness (known in Hebrew as chesed), helping him to see his own strengths, and helping him to love himself. And it is with this perspective that Moses found the strength to heed the call. And the rest, as we say, is history.

What a blessing it is to have this kind of voice, filled with compassionate love/chesed, in our lives. It is such a blessing to surround ourselves with friends, new and old, who affirm the core of who we are. People who see us for goodness we bring into the world, even when we don't see it ourselves.

I recently stepped into a space so flooded with this kind of chesed at a Multicultural LGBT+ Faith Leaders gathering. We shared vulnerability, courage, and authenticity. We gathered across religious traditions, and affirmed the goodness in one another's service. Our convenor, Pastor Sammie Haynes, often preaches to “do what ignites your soul!” It was so great to co-create a space where we could each hear and see what that would look like for one another, and support one another's efforts.

One of the great blessings in my life is being a rabbi and having people share what ignites their soul- to know that I can be counted on as a clergy member who can see YOU and know your struggles, and who sees the goodness in you. I will champion your journey toward full expression with chesed/loving kindness at the core.

This week of the Counting of the Omer, we highlight the Divine quality of Chesed/Lovingkindness. Who are you at your core? Who in your life can you champion?

Let’s spread that kind of goodness around the globe!

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

INTERFAITH ZOOM PASSOVER SEDER

So MANY thanks to all who participated in this year's annual Interfaith Intergenerational Passover Seder! We were uplifted with sacred music (in Hebrew & English, religious & secular, new & classic) from Grammy winning artist, Joanie Leeds, and inspired by deep questions and understandings curated by Rabbi Heather Miller. What a transformative, joyful, inclusive environment! And, keep celebrating this whole week! Enjoy the following video on some of the basics and also lesser-known facts about this holiday week HERE:

ISLAMIC CENTER OF IRVINE, RAMADAN

Rabbi Miller enjoyed the blessings of time with the leadership of the Islamic Center of Irvine at their annual Interfaith Iftar. Community Leader Akbar Hussein, Sheikh Mustafa Akbar, and Executive Director Amin Rufaq welcomed scores of spiritual and civic leaders in the spirit of goodwill and sharing under the nearly full moon sky on a warm Southern California evening. What a joy to be in community together.

IN HONOR OF EID AL FATIR...

*We named this program for KITS member Melanie Grohman z"l (may her memory be for a blessing). She died unexpectedly this past summer at her home in Rockport, TX. She was very involved in our programs and in the midst of immersing herself in the study of Judaism and practices. We uplift her loving memory by naming this program in honor of her love of exploring Jewish life through the KITS community programming.

HOT MEALS RESUME!

The inhumane condition of the food inside the OC Jails has improved! Our voice in the form of letters to Sheriff Don Barnes, joining the movement begun by local organizations engaged in this struggle helped persuade leadership there to resume hot meals. As you know, previously, the inmates had been denied hot meals (even during winter), and instead served moldy and decaying bologna sandwiches and the like. As we are reminded, you can't get well in a cell.

The importance of this move is best described by inmate Jose Armendariz who shares,

"It is an absolute pleasure to report to you all that for the last two days we have been receiving hot meals at the Orange County Jails. Of course, they can never compare to a real hot meal with our family and loved ones, but just to have something that's different, a little less harmful is something to really rejoice about. Now, the Orange County Sheriff's Department is good at responding to controversial issues but only when there is a strong community effort to hold them accountable. With that being said, it is because of all of your support and all of your solidarity during April 3rd's food justice rally that today we are eating a hot meal for the first time in over two years. So on behalf of the Orange County incarcerated community, thank you so so much! I want to thank especially the Stop the Musick Coalition for helping us organize that event, Transforming Justice OC, and our friends from Abolition Now. Let us not forget that the Orange County Sheriff's Department does not operate under moralistic ideals or with human kindness in mind. I can personally attest to the fact that they are not happy about this [resuming hot meals]. Unfortunately, that is the sick and dark reality of incarceration. The perpetuation of evil and harm where watching incarcerated people under their mercy suffer is much more desirable than offering us a decent meal. We cannot lose sight of this dark reality. And we must continue in our fight to abolish it."

ROSH CHODESH RACIAL JUSTICE REVIEW

Rosh Chodesh is the celebration of the new month. And over the next six months, our Rosh Chodesh Racial Justice Review series will take time to explore 12 Steps to Changing Yourself and the World: An Abolitionist’s Handbook by Patrisse Cullors. Each month, we will discuss two chapters of this work which will simultaneously address transforming our inner personal lives and also the institutional infrastructures of injustice around us. 3pm PT/6pm ET: 3/3, 4/2, 5/8, 5/31, 6/30 and 7/28 Register at: keepingitsacred.com/upcoming-1

BREAKING NEWS! Co-founder of Black Lives Matter, artist, and author Patrisse Cullors will JOIN US 7/28 to discuss her book!

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 28 different states and 8 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
