Reyets Question of the Week: Do COVID-19 health and safety laws protect immigrant workers?

When workers face certain hazards, their employers have an obligation to provide and pay for personal protective equipment (PPE).

This obligation exists regardless of a worker’s immigration status. PPE can include masks and gloves; a worker’s right to this equipment depends on the particular facts of a worker’s industry and worksite. OSHA is not enforcing any requirement for any personal protective equipment in this pandemic. However, some state and local officials are now requiring that workers wear masks in certain jobs—and these requirements may expand as the disease continues to spread in workplaces.

Additionally, workers can join together to engage in concerted activity to ensure adequate protection on the job, as highlighted above. This can include demands for employer-provided PPE in order to perform their essential job functions safely.

Do You Know About That Student Nonviolent Group That Fought Against Injustice In Northern American Regions?

Meet the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)

Established by an interracial group of students from the University of Chicago in 1942, CORE used nonviolent tactics to challenge segregation in Northern cities during the 1940s. They organized diner sit-in demonstrations and challenged racial covenant housing (such as redlining) in Chicago.

Some of their founding members included, but aren't limited to: Bernice Fisher, James R. Robinson, James L. Farmer, Jr., Joe Guinn, George Houser, and Homer Jack. Overall, CORE's mission was to improve race relations and end discriminatory policies through direct-action projects. Today, 75 years later, CORE continues to serve Americans for the greater purpose of racial equality.

What Is Critical Race Theory, and Why Is It Politized?

Is Critical Race Theory (CRT) an educational approach that pits people of color against white people? Or, is it a more intentional framework of teaching American racism in the classroom setting?

Here's what you should know about CRT:

The basic concept of CRT emerged from a framework for legal analysis in the late 1970s and early 1980s created by legal scholars Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Richard Delgado, among others. With that said, this framework is more than forty years old!

CRT is deemed to be successful in achieving beyond a surface understanding of American racism. CRT teaches that race is a social construct and that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies. With that said, CRT aims to deconstruct racism to help us evaluate the systems we must construct to form measurable progress.
