Have we come together or are we allowing the age-old 'business as usual' systematic powers perpetuate the status quo? What role does art and/or the artist play in moving toward positive social change? What is our individual/social/cultural birthright? Is it being dismantled? In a system that claims to be 'of the people, by the people, and for the people,' which people are we talking about?" What's Going On? This exhibition poses these questions and seeks to explore how art, in many facets, is being utilized to show us who we are and what we are doing in relation to the current cultural landscape. It is, in essence, a visual, conversation that will possibly lead toward discovering the answers or realizing your real truth. |

CLEVER LAYER Courtney Starrett August 3 - September 29, 2018 Opie Gallery Clever Layer is a collection of recent works by New York-based artist Courtney Starrett. The works in this exhibition were created utilizing a process Starrett coined “Data Materialization.”
Data materialization is a workflow to create 3D objects from data-informed designs. Building upon traditional metalwork and craft, and new technology’s data visualization with generative art, this workflow expresses conceptually relevant data through 3D forms which are fabricated in traditional media. The process allows for the subtle application of data in visual art, allowing the aesthetic allure of the art object or installation to inspire intellectual intrigue. Drawing on the concepts of gender roles, consumer marketing, and material science this exhibition invites the viewer to experience the artwork in multiple ways, catching the eye and sparking curiosity. ...read more... |

FACES AFTER SUICIDE Lindsey Doolittle August 3 - September 28, 2018 Back Gallery Postvention is Prevention
On April 22nd, 2015 the artist’s husband, Sgt. Brett Doolittle of the Kansas City, Kansas police department, lost all hope and ended his life. Lindsey joined the support group SASS (Suicide Awareness Survivor Support) who helped show her that she wasn’t alone, to not be ashamed, and it wasn’t her fault.
During group sessions, she kept her herself calm by drawing other loss survivors, capturing the emotional repercussions their loved one’s suicide unknowingly left behind. Never intending to place her artworks on display, she decided it was time for the public to see the gauntlet of grief that suicide creates, which is unlike any other death. Loss survivors are conflicted with the thought that the person who murdered their loved one, was their loved one. Where mourners are met with compassion and sympathy; suicide loss survivors are faced with blame, judgment and exclusion. Despair, rage, torture, longing, confusion, agony, or recalling happy memories are some of the expressions you will see on the blind-contour ink drawings. To keep everyone’s anonymity, all artworks are titled by who that group member lost to suicide, with the exception of the creators of SASS.

KCAI | Undergrads Underground Gallery Site as Seen: KCAI in Florence, Italy September 7 - October 27, 2018 This summer, 16 KCAI students traveled to Florence, Italy, to live and work for 6-weeks in one of the most influential and innovative cities in the history of visual art, architecture, science and philosophy. Within this city of extant collections and site-specific masterworks, students were immersed within a seemingly boundless selection of precedent and resources with which to conduct their research. This exhibition highlights a selection of this research and thesis work completed in a shared drawing course, as well as from courses of the students’ choosing from the SACI curriculum, including: Painting Conservation, Renaissance Art History, Batik, Boun Fresco and Marble Sculpting. Works in the exhibition range from a selection of sketchbooks, prose, buon fresco, marble sculpture, assemblage, collage, photography, and a variety of approaches to drawing and painting. Jessie Fisher, September 2018 Professor in Painting, Kansas City Art Institute Program Head, KCAI at SACI: A 6-credit Collaborative Summer Program in Florence, Italy |

TOBIAS DESIGNS POP-UP SHOP September 7, 2018 | 6pm - 9pm & September 8, 2018 | 11am - 5pm
Make sure to stop by our Shop this First Friday in September and meet jewelry artist, Britta McKee of Tobias Designs! Artist Statement/Bio
Shortly after graduating from the University of Kansas in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Britta McKee started her jewelry business hunched over a workbench in a cramped garage in Topeka, Kansas. From those humble beginnings, "Tobias Designs" jewelry now reside in nine shops across four states - at least until a new owner makes them their own.
McKee began, and remains active, in local and regional art and craft shows which offered her the opportunity to expose her work to the masses as well as earn her custom design orders. As her client base grew so did her list of accolades. Magazines and local models show off Tobias Designs jewelry, as does the Topeka Capitol building after commissioning McKee to design and create jewelry using recycled copper panels from its iconic dome. Her passion and dedication to her handcrafted work earned the 2013 Kansas City Accessory Designer of the Year and Kansas City Peoples' Choice - Accessory Designer of the Year award.
Drawing inspiration from nature, raw materials, and her rambunctious kids, Britta McKee, owner of Tobias Designs, invites patrons to interpret her work in any way their perspective offers. Utilizing layers of colors, textures, shapes and schemes, McKee masks and re-imagines her original design intents. The “straightforward complexity” ensures that wearers of her jewelry make it their own while, at the same time creating an identity for her work that strives for people to recognize, “That’s a Tobias Design piece."
Tobias Designs’ jewelry is oxymoronic: simple, yet detailed. Structured, yet organic. Geometric, yet soft. It’s a dirty and intensive process that results in stunning jewelry. |
