Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together

Professor Fang Shu

Dear friends, have you been following the Tokyo Olympics 2020? Despite being extremely busy with my research project this summer, I watch games I find interesting when I have time. My favorite thing about the Olympics is its motto, "Faster, Higher, Stronger". It is the same motto many of us have adopted in our daily lives to work towards success.

It has since come to my attention that the International Olympic Committee has amended its "Faster, Higher, Stronger" motto to include the word 'Together' this year. The motto now reads: "Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together".

"The collaborative effort is bringing faster and better results than working in silos and protecting each silo from the progress of the other silo," said Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee. This update, he says, aims to emphasize the need for solidarity during such hard times as the COVID-19 pandemic. “Solidarity fuels our mission to make the world a better place through sport. We can only go faster, we can only aim higher, we can only become stronger by standing together — in solidarity.”

I like this new motto. There is no question that athletes all want gold medals and to win honor for their countries. From their perspective, they must compete with one another. A positive shift in perspectives can be achieved if athletes focus on a "we" rather than a "they." As Bach said, our mission is to make the world a better place through sport.

It's now a world of collaborations. Around me, I've seen many successful people. When compared to most people, they are "faster", "higher", and "stronger". In addition, one trait they have in common is the ability to collaborate. For instance, top scholars collaborate to publish their research projects, not to focus on their own influence or key performance indicators, but to promote research and industry development.

If you haven't already done so, I urge you to work with others. Not only will you become much more "faster", "higher", and "stronger", but together you will also make the world a better place.

Best regards

Fang
