  • WEBINARS - GloFouling Partnerships launched a series of monthly webinars to discover specific aspects, challenges and solutions, across all the maritime sectors related to biofouling and invasive aquatic species.   • POOL OF EXPERT CONSULTANTS - GloFouling Partnerships is seeking to increase its pool of experts to deliver work on a wide range of assignments, such as the development of technical reports, studies and training materials, and the delivery of training courses.   • NEW IMO DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHED - GloFouling Partnerships is now part of the new IMO Department of Partnerships and Projects, which will tackle key global issues through innovative partnership. For more information see this link.

 

  • NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND GLOBAL NEWS - The latest lead partnering country to hold its National workshop and first Task Force meeting was Sri Lanka. For more information see this link.

 

  • PPR 7 - The Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response held its seventh session (PPR 7). Five documents were submitted under agenda item seven (Review of the 2011 Guidelines for the control and management of ships' biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species (Resolution MEPC.207(62))) for the Sub-Committee's consideration:

    • PPR 7/7 - Additional actions to minimize biofouling introductions (Submitted by ICES);

    • PPR 7/7/1 - Biofouling management survey (Submitted by BIMCO);

    • PPR 7/7/2 - Preliminary review of a range of Member State, observer and industry perspectives (Submitted by Australia, Finland, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, INTERTANKO and ACOPS);

    • PPR 7/7/3 - Key findings from New Zealand's assessment of the uptake and implementation of the Biofouling Guidelines (Submitted by New Zealand);

    • PPR 7/7/4 - Key issues and intentions for the review of the Guidelines (Submitted by Australia, Finland, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and IMarEST).

  • OUTCOME OF PPR 7 - The Sub-Committee: 
    • agreed to the identified key elements of the Biofouling Guidelines that require further attention and discussion, and the corresponding areas for potential revision of the Guidelines, as set out in annex 1 (paragraph 11);
    • agreed to establish a correspondence group on the review of the Biofouling Guidelines with the draft terms of reference set out in annex 2 (paragraph 14); and
    • encouraged interested Member States and international organizations to contact the Coordinator of the correspondence group, with a view to participating and contributing to the work of that group, including the provision of information on best practices (paragraph 15);
