Greetings CCCHS! I hope you are all enjoying the summer! It was so great to see many of you at the picnic in June. Another big thank you to Calvary for providing a delicious lunch for us! As a reminder - membership meetings will not be held in July and August but stay tuned to your email for updates and announcements throughout the summer months. Last year, many of you participated in a membership survey to provide us feedback on a variety of topics. The Board of Directors has been reviewing this feedback as a whole as well as within specific committees. We value your feedback and have found this to be a a very helpful tool. As meetings resume in the fall, you will see some changes to the format that we hope will provide more opportunity for networking and interaction. We hope you will all join us when meetings resume in September! If you are interested in presenting at a membership meeting in the fall, please contact Dee Hall (mhall@centresafe.org) or Katie Kensinger (Katie.Kensinger@Junipercommunities.com to sign up. The opportunity to present at meetings 1 time per year is a membership benefit and we encourage you to sign up and share information about your organization!Again, we look forward to seeing you all in the fall! OUT OF THE COLD Volunteer Host Organizations Needed! Centre County (OOTC3) has been serving the homeless in the Centre Region as an emergency overnight shelter since 2011. Begun in response to the death of an unsheltered gentleman, that first season we served 28 different people, averaging 2 each night and filling 197 cots. This season we served 74 different folks, averaging 15 per evening, and filling 2,978 cots. One night we had 26 folks in shelter, a new record high. Open 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. every night from mid-October through mid-May, guests receive a hot dinner upon arrival and breakfast in the morning before they leave for the day. Cots, blankets, a warm welcome and sweet hospitality are lavished upon each guest. As the number of guests we are serving has grown, OOTC3 has expanded services in order to better serve our homeless neighbors. This season we hired a Program Manager to provide both oversight to the shelter and case management to our guests. In addition, we began a small day shelter program to offer lunches, showers, mail service, case management and community to our guests during the day time. Out of the Cold is a partnership of 16 area churches: Assembly of God, Calvary, Faith United Church of Christ, Friends’ Meetinghouse, Good Shepherd Catholic, Grace Lutheran, Houserville United Methodist, St. Andrew’s Episcopal, St. Paul’s United Methodist, St. John’s United Church of Christ, State College Christian, State College |

Presbyterian, Unitarian Universalist, Unity Church of Jesus Christ, University Baptist & Brethren, and University Mennonite. Thirteen of those churches serve as site hosts and the others are ministry partners. The overnight shelter rotates among the host churches approximately every two weeks. During that time the host site provides the space for the shelter and helps to recruit volunteers from their congregation who serve as hosts, meal providers and overnight staff Because our season length is determined by the number of participating organizations, we are always looking for more groups willing to serve as a host site. Cold Octobers and rainy Mays cause us to long for an extended season for our unsheltered community members. It is not required that host sites be a member of the faith community, only that they are willing to open their doors from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., have space for approximately 25 cots and a place to serve meals, and have a pool of volunteers willing to serve some of the most vulnerable among our community. If you or your organization are interested in considering this amazing opportunity (you will be blessed more than you can imagine!), please contact Beckie Romig, Program Manager at 814.852.8864 or ootccentreco@gmail.com and learn more about how you can get involved with Out of the Cold: Centre County. |
