Can I compete with a men's team if I identify as a woman? |
Hey, changemakers! That's a great question. In short, the answer is yes. Under Title IX, schools and coaches are not permitted to discourage you from trying out or joining a sports team of the opposite sex. Title IX ensures that schools and universities provide equal opportunities for girls' and boys' teams, which includes allowing you to try out for a team of the opposite sex. This applies not only to regular school sports but also to intramural and university-sponsored sports. If your school or university is not complying with Title IX guidelines, you can file a formal complaint with the Office of Civil Rights. To learn more about your rights as a student and athlete, visit the "Know Your Rights" section on the Reyets website. |

🙋🏽♀️ Civil Rights Pioneer Introducing Billie Jean King |
Billie Jean King, born in 1943 in California, tirelessly fought to level the playing field for both men and women in tennis. She began playing tennis at the age of 11 and went on to hold the number 1 title five times in her career. With her extensive experience in winning titles and major matches, she witnessed firsthand the disparities in prizes between men and women. Motivated to bring about change, Billie co-founded the World Team Tennis, which enables male and female players to compete together. Additionally, she established the Women's Tennis Association two years prior to the passing of Title IX, a law that prohibits gender discrimination in sports. Billie's unwavering efforts have been dedicated to ensuring that women are afforded equal opportunities in tennis as their male counterparts. |
