I had the pleasure of teaching Andrew while he was finishing his degree in music at the University of Massachusetts. Since our short time together (10 years ago) he grew into an amazing percussionist and highly sought after instructor. We reconnected a few weeks ago after I saw he was a featured educator on the Zildjian website (#1 cymbal manufacturer on the planet)!
Sadly, Andrew passed away as I was putting together this month's newsletter. I'm so happy I had the chance to work with Andrew and (most importantly) tell him how proud I was of all his accomplishments. Be sure to click this link to see Andrew playing and teaching at his best.

I teach all my students to keep track of their practice details. It's a simple habit that makes learning faster.
Write the date of when we begin learning a new skill. The reminder of how long ago you started can be a motivator to get moving (if it's been awhile) or a pat on the back if you finish quickly.
Write your current metronome speed and goal tempo. Next time you practice you'll know exactly how fast to start playing (in order to pick where you left off) and where the finish line is.
Circle any trouble spots in the music. You'll know where to focus your attention during the next workout.
Jot down any special directions or words of wisdom your fabulous teacher gives during your lessons. Seeing this information while at home can be the difference between learning and moving on the following week or repeating the same lesson because you practiced incorrectly.
