HELLO WORLD

Showing up at work when you have too much going on

It's been a full summer here at Virago Labs: We launched a beta app, ran multiple strategic product leader courses, and expanded our business offerings all while our personal lives ramped up: Terri took multiple trips and Rosie bought a house.

The question we’ve been in is how do strategic leaders show up at work when commitments in our personal lives collide with work?

In the coming month, we’ll be doing less, resting more, and taking advantage of this gorgeous Seattle summer.

Wishing you a full and resilient summer,

Terri Eccles & Rosie Olaivar

5 STEPS FOR SHOWING UP AT WORK WHEN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH GOING ON

1. Pay attention to how you're feeling

We often hear tips and tricks for helping us to "control" our emotions, but that's the wrong idea: strong emotions aren't bad, and they don't need to be pushed down or controlled. What we need to do is learn to develop emotional agility, the capacity to mine even the most difficult emotions for data that can help us make better decisions.

2. Practice gratitude

When you're busy, your life feels out of control, like a hamster on a treadmill. In a full-life, you chose all the things filling your life. This realization helps produce an immense amount of gratitude and resilience.

3. Take small breaks

Throughout the workday, it's important to pay attention to the peaks and valleys of energy and productivity that we all experience, what health psychologists call our ultradian (hourly) as opposed to our circadian (daily) rhythms. Mental focus, clarity and energy cycles are typically 90-120 minutes long, so it is useful to step away from our work for even a few minutes to reset energy and attention.

4. Be open with your co-workers

In the old days it was a lot easier to believe "work equals rational" and "home equals emotional". But now that work and home life constantly bleed into each other, that distinction has become anachronistic... If men and women were to express more emotion routinely and easily at work, then as people we might not feel so chronically anxious and overwhelmed.

5. Ask for help

When you've got a lot on your plate, sometimes you can't see clearly enough to ask for help. But taking a few moments to reach out to your network and get support can make all the difference. Read our tips for asking for help from acquaintances over email.
