OUR NEXT DECO DIALOGUE:

ICADS MEMBER SOCIETY COLLABORATIONS

We are pleased to invite you to join with leaders of other ICADS societies for our next Deco Dialogue via Zoom on Saturday, October 7th at noon Eastern time. 

These quarterly Deco Dialogues address common issues facing leaders of ICADS societies everywhere. The October Deco Dialogue topic will be Collaborations Between ICADS Member Societies.  During our ZOOM meeting we will explore ways ICADS member societies can partner with other ICADS groups for collaborative events and activities, including co-hosting virtual programs to help share costs, hosting events for visiting members, and working together on education and preservation projects of mutual interest.

A few member organizations will share ideas and success stories of recent joint events. Afterward, there will be time to brainstorm ideas for future collaborations.

If you have attended one of our past Deco Dialogues, you know that they are valuable opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with leaders of other ICADS organizations.

WORLD ART DECO DAY 2024 THEME ANNOUNCED: SPORTS!

Sports will be the theme for World Art Deco Day 2024. The choice is appropriate because the 2024 Olympic Games will take place in Paris, the year prior to the 2025 World Congress, forming back-to-back centennial celebrations of the 1924 Paris Games and the 1925 Paris Exposition. As with last year's theme, Sports is broad enough to allow all societies to develop a program of interest on the topic. We hope each society will start developing a program or activity around the sports theme. Better yet, we hope some of you will again develop a virtual program that can be made available to other ICADS member societies around the world.

World Art Deco Day is an annual month-long celebration of Art Deco that takes place in April. Throughout the month, ICADS Member Organizations offer programs and activities highlighting the unique Art Deco heritage of their city and region. World Art Deco Day is now in its fourth year, and we are happy to see it growing in popularity and appeal. It is a great way to continue to strengthen our global community dedicated to the preservation, education, and celebration of Art Deco. We introduced the idea of a specific theme last year to help member societies focus on the development of a program or activity of mutual interest to other ICADS members. Last year's theme, Egyptomania, proved very popular with in-person events as well as several virtual programs available to a wide audience. Events may include walking tours, illustrated lectures, and social get-togethers at local places of preservation interest.

THE UPCOMING ICADS BOARD ELECTION

The current board's two-year term is due to expire at the end of November 2023. Nominations for and election of candidates for the 4 executive positions and 4 general board members will take place in November, and the elected board members will begin their term on December 1st. Robin Grow (Art Deco and Modernism Society of Australia) will oversee the nomination and election process. Please be on the lookout for email correspondence from Robin with further information, but until then, here is a brief overview of the process:

• A qualifying nominee is the official representative of an ICADS member society in good standing.

• Nominations shall be submitted via email to Robin at robingrow@ozemail.com.au by November 15th.

• If more than one nomination is received for any executive position or if more than four nominations are received for general board member positions, a runoff election for those positions will take place in the second half of November.

• Should we need a run-off election, more details on the nomination and election process will come via email to the official representative of each ICADS member society during the second half of November.

2025 PARIS WORLD CONGRESS ON ART DECO UPDATE

Pascal Laurent, President of the Paris Art Deco Society, is hard at work developing plans for the 2025 World Congress. Paris will be the host for the Congress, with a Pre-Congress tour to Rheims and Post-Congress trip to Brussels. While dates have not been set, the Congress will most likely take place at the end of the third quarter of the year. Details for hotels, conference venues, tours, meals, and much more are currently being developed. We know everyone is anxiously awaiting further information on Paris 2025. We expect interest to be intense and registrations to fill quickly. We will have further updates in future editions of the ICADS newsletter.

2027 WORLD CONGRESS ON ART DECO HOST CITY ANNOUNCED:

CHICAGO, HERE WE COME!

We are pleased to report that Chicago has been selected as the host of the 2027 World Congress on Art Deco! Chicago has a rich architectural heritage including stellar examples of Art Deco. It was also home to the Century of Progress World's Fair in 1933-34, one of the defining events of the movement. Ideas for Pre- and Post-Congresses include Milwaukee, Wisconsin as well as visits to Racine, Wisconsin and Oak Park, Illinois to see the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. We look forward to working with the Chicago Art Deco Society as plans evolve for the 2027 World Congress.

THE ICADS GLOBAL EVENTS CALENDAR

Speaking of the ICADS website, please don't forget about the Global Events Calendar. It is a great resource for boosting participation in your society’s virtual events and alerting travelers to your city of in-person events as well. Submitting an entry is easy, with clear step-by-step instructions provided on the website. The Calendar Committee will review and approve events and post them to the calendar within a few days. Just go to the calendar page on the website to learn more.

The calendar will only be useful if our member societies participate and share their events. Please make submission to the calendar part of your regular event promotion routine. Most importantly, please share the calendar with your members.
