Pancake Breakfast

It's going to be Pancake Time again soon!  Our annual Tucker 4H Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at Swan's Pumpkin Farm has been confirmed for Saturday September 23rd so mark your calendars.  We will have the job sign-up sheet available at the June picnic, July fair tag pick up, and August record book drop off so see Laura Bond at one of those events to get the job you want.  It's best to sign up early and if there's a last-minute conflict in the Fall such as a soccer game, we can work it out in September.  We'll also be having committees again to help coordinate everything such as: milk, griddles, flowers, tools, cakes, sausages, coffee, and PR.  If there are any parents who would like to join the Pancake Breakfast Leadership Team or head a committee, please talk to Laura Bond or Jenny Weisensel.  Either of those jobs would count as your parent participation for the year, working at the breakfast is required of all families and is not the same as parent participation.  This is our one club fundraiser for the year and provides a means for all the great activities we continue to expand upon.  Also, check out the Racine County Breakfast on the Farm this year as our friends at Swan's Pumpkin Farm will be hosting 6/24.

JUNIOR LEADER CORNER

(For all members in 7th grade and above)

 Junior Leader Updates

Attention all members in 7th grade or above, the following announcements pertain directly to you! First, since our June Picnic is starting at 6pm, which is an hour earlier than our meeting normally starts, we are asking that the junior leaders arrive at 5:30 pm to make sure that we still have time to quickly meet before the meeting to discuss the agenda and upcoming events. Thanks!

Attention Officers! If you held an office this year and are changing officers for next year, make sure you return your officer folders so that they can be given to the new officers. If you would like to be attendance officer, recreation officer

Officers Still Needed! We have a few openings left for next year on our officer team. If you would like to be a recreation officer, attendance officer, sergeant at arms, photographer/historian, sunshine officer, or reporter, we still could use more people to help fill those offices.

NO Tucker Junior Leader Meetings in June or July! There will be no Tucker Junior Leader Meetings in June or July, but we will start having meetings again in August with a fun junior leader activity to help kick off the year. More information will come out as this gets closer.

County Junior Leaders Association Meeting! Calling all members in 7th grade and above! This month's county Junior Leaders Association (or JLA) meeting will be held on Monday, June 26th at 7:00pm at the Ives Grove COunty Office Building in Ives Grove. We highly encourage all junior leaders to attend as these meetings are a lot of fun and a great way to get to know other teens with similar interests from around the county. See you there!

Cloverbud Judging

At the fair, Cloverbuds are "judged" based on participation by junior leaders (grades 7 and up). Tucker members have volunteered several times in the past to help with this and it is so much fun! You can help label or arrange exhibits, clerk and record all the Cloverbuds who show projects, or "judge" and get to talk to the kids about how they made their projects. It's a great time and a perfect opportunity to meet other junior leaders from around the county and get volunteer hours at the same time! You can sign up here. You can talk to Mary, Shannon, or Josie if you have any questions! ~ Josie

Judging Practice

Getting "judged" at the County Fair might seem intimidating to some first year exhibitors or younger members, but it is actually a really cool experience. You get to talk to a judge about how you made your project, what you use it for, what you learned, etc. Then the judge gives you feedback about what they especially like and what you could do to improve or make something at a higher level the next year. All of the judges are super nice and encouraging! To prepare for this, we will be offering practice judging at the June general meeting if you would like to participate. This would be a great way to get a little more comfortable talking to someone about your projects before having to do it at the fair! Even if you don't bring your project, just talking about it with an older member provides great experience. ~ Josie

Placing Flags for Memorial Day

The Tucker 4-H members went to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery on the Saturday before Memorial Day to honor the Veterans. First, they showed us how to put the flags by the graves. Then, we said the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem. After that, we were all assigned a column of graves to place flags by. After we placed each flag, we said the person’s name with our hands over our hearts. After we placed the flags, we had doughnut holes and apple cider. We were honored to respect the Veterans who died in the war.

Leader Needs for Next Year

We are looking ahead to our next 4-H year.  Please carefully consider whether you have a talent or skill that you could share with our club. We're in need of adult leaders to help run our meetings and events as well as project leaders including Cats, Foods and Nutrition, Leathercraft, Drawing and Painting, Model Making, Small Engine, and Woodworking. Do you have a great idea for a new project? Please tell a leader!  Do you know a friend or relative who would be able to help us out? If you have been in 4-H for a few years now, please consider stepping into a leadership role. Your experience is extremely valuable to our new members! If you don't feel comfortable taking on a project on your own, we might know of someone who would be willing to co-lead with you.

May Meeting Re-Cap

I hope everyone had a great time at the May Meeting! Incase you missed it, we held our elections for our 2023-2024 officer team. The club is still in need of a Sergeant at Arms so if you are interested please reach out to Jenny Weisensel. We are super excited for our next year in 4-H. Our May meeting was also our Gym Night so we played games and watched a demonstration after the general meeting. Thank you to the O’Diernos for the great Jiu Jitsu Demonstration! Lastly, there was collection held for the Veterans Outreach and an Animal Shelter. Thank you to those that donated! I hope to see you at the June Meeting!

4-H County Fundraiser

Thanks to all of the families who helped with set up and pick up for the fundraiser.  Overall, things went very well and I think it was more efficient having the clubs come through at set times.   Unfortunately we were shorted some products and I appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience .  Sam worked very hard to get everything organized and is still trying to fine tune things for the future.   Again, thanks for your support!
Michelle

Also, for anyone who did not pick up their order, please see me at the meeting-I will have them!

We will also have a drawing at the picnic for a few extra pizzas

Parent Participation and Fair Building Supervision

Thank you to everyone who has helped out so far this year. Your time and effort helped to make our meetings and events run smoothly! Please reach out if you have not fulfilled your parent requirement yet and we will find a way for you to help. Here are our latest needs:

June Picnic

If you signed up to bring something for the picnic, please be sure to do so.

Be sure to save your receipts and turn them in for reimbursement!

Fair Building Supervision

We have all of the shifts covered and have enough people interested that we can discuss dividing shifts so they are shorter. If you signed up to supervise the youth building at the fair, we will have a brief meeting at the June picnic to discuss shift timing and responsibilities.

Record Books

There are many record books to read in August and we need people to help review them. A signup will be sent out with dates and timing.

Fair Entries

Be sure to go to the Racine County Fair website and enter all of your projects.

The deadline to enter is June 16 at midnight.

There are no exceptions made. It is best to get your entries completed well in advance so there are no problems. Taking a look at the entry process before the June picnic would be helpful as you can come to the meeting with any questions you may have. Our leaders will be able to help out with fair entries that night and a laptop will be available.

Interview with Milton and Marjorie Wentzel, former Tucker 4-H members and 94-year-old neighbors of the Bond family.

1. Were you or any of your kids in 4-H?

Milton and Marjorie were never in 4-H as kids, but all three of their children were in Tucker 4-H.

2. What projects did your kids participate in?

Kevin and Robert were in woodworking, their daughter LuAnne was in sewing.  Kevin was also in the dog and electrical projects.  The electrical project was run by Mr. Schultz who lived in the house next door to Milton and Marjorie, it is the same house that the Bond Family lives in now.

3. Were you a leader for any projects?

Milton was the assistant for the woodworking project, he kept the machines running.  He's good with machines since his background is as a tool and die maker.  At the time the woodworking leader was the father of our current basketry leader and former club leader Ruth Hoffmann.

4. What are your memories of Tucker school?

It was a very good school with Christmas plays and potlucks. Kevin would have been 6 years old when he walked down Hwy V on his own to Tucker school, he also skipped a grade.

The photos are of Milton and Marjorie in their home with some of the items their kids made in 4-H on the wall behind them (the paper towel holder behind Marjorie and Cassandra and the decorative scalloped edge shelf behind Milton).
