Sausalito Working Waterfront Coalition
As Opening Day on the Bay approaches the boatyards are jammed with work!
At Spaulding Boatworks they're lined up up four across, with one inside, and one lined-up waiting.
Earlier in the month, Candela's new electric hydrofoil boat was hauled out for some finishing touches. Notice the foils in red.
At Bayside Boatworks, behind the ORCA, and shrouded in a canopy is the Lisa Marie motor yacht undergoing a restoration. New brightwork inside and out as well as some hull work is keeping the boatyard crew busy. The new cap rail being installed comes from a 38 foot piece of sapele wood sustainably sourced from Africa.
At Bayside Boatworks largest shipways work continues (below) on Parker Diving's 1950's era Landing Craft and another vessel behind.
Among other boats, Richardson Bay Boatworks is working on a WW II-era landing craft that was converted to a floating home.
Thinking about Sausalito’s Blue Economy
The World Bank estimates that the global maritime economy will double to $3 trillion by 2030. With this demand as the backdrop, Sausalito is uniquely positioned as a small community with a host of competitive advantages. We have valuable infrastructure created during WWII, including large shipways and a powerful electric grid once used to build Liberty Ships that’s now prized by modern maritime and light-industrial innovators who are generating valuable patents, training and apprenticeship programs, and a vibrant artist community that makes Sausalito special.
It's important to define what the Blue Economy means for Sausalito...
For about a year now Noria Energy has been working away in the Marinship. Noria is an innovator in renewable solar energy projects and has recently specialized in floating solar projects.
Multiple Applications
Floating solar systems easily integrate with hydroelectric facilities including dams, and pumped-hydro diversifying energy generation for more resilient, reliable production. They are also easily dispatched atop water treatment facilities aiding in water treatment while supplying electricity. As well, these systems can be deployed on industrial ponds or any other unproductive water area to generate both energy and savings.
Prototyping in the Marinship
Noria tests their prototypes off Sausalito's shoreline in the Marinship. So if you see a floating solar panel in Richardson Bay we hope it reminds you the legacy of maritime innovation and the blue economy is alive and well here and that our industrial/maritime zone can continue to be an important part of our business community.
Healdsburg Project
In 2021 Noria completed a 4.78MW floating solar project for the City of Healdsburg ...
YIMBY (Yes in My Back Yard) housing group announced on Wednesday, March 8 that they would be filing a lawsuit against Sausalito. Why is YIMBY doing this? We can only speculate since Sausalito was one of the few communities in Marin County that met their Jan 31 deadline to adopt their housing element and identify where their allocated housing units can be built. YIMBY believes Sausalito is and should be subject to the Builder's Remedy law that significantly limits local control of where housing should be developed.
To get an idea of what YIMBY is about please read the Marin Post blog on YIMBY published Feb 11, HERE.
