A THOUGHT FROM JENNIFER

“Why are you wasting time planning? Just do the work!”

Sound familiar? If so, I’m sorry. 💔 I’ve heard it, too.

Sure, PMs can geek out and over-plan once in a while, but that’s not usually the situation. This question is often asked by people who aren’t PMs. They feel the pressure to deliver but don’t understand the importance of the first phase of a healthy project—planning.

The planning phase is one of the most critical moments of any new project. (The kick-off meeting is another!) Unhealthy projects often rush through this stage and miss out on time to grow trust and gain clarity.

Collaborative Planning

Planning requires drawing on the perspectives of team members who bring context and skills the PM doesn’t have but definitely needs. During this process, the team identifies risks, thinks through operational realities, and brings innovative ideas to the table.

When you include team members and stakeholders in the planning process, you come away with a more well-rounded and adaptable plan, and the team will be aligned on:

  • Goals

  • Key milestones

  • Critical information to include in each progress report

  • Risks (and how to avoid them)

A solid planning phase—like the foundation of a building—is the critical element that sets a healthy project up for success.

Happy planning!

POINT TO PONDER

How do you determine the right amount of planning for a new project?

What can you change or refine in your planning process to increase collaboration and alignment before the project even starts?

A RESOURCE WE LOVE

Project Planning and Bluey?

By Carolyn Wildermuth, Communications Director

Wait a minute…you’re telling me the kids’ show Bluey can teach me about project planning?

Yes, indeed! Watch this short video, New Project! Now What?, by Caitlin Emas, PMP to find out how.

If you’ve ever been assigned a new project and immediately panicked when you thought about how to get started, this video will put your mind at ease.

Caitlin sets you up for success by providing five key questions you should ask at the beginning of every project.

These questions will help you set your goals, break the project into bite-size pieces, and identify the constraints you're working under, so you can build a realistic plan.

BRAIN BREAK

Two Minutes of Wonder

By Sarah Dolan, PMP

Amid the tasks, challenges, and pressures we may encounter on any given workday, it’s refreshing to experience a sense of wonder, if only for a few minutes.

When I first read the tagline for this video—a Japanese telecom company’s ad featuring a giant xylophone playing Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”—I was a bit skeptical but intrigued enough to watch.

As the video progressed, though, I found myself smiling more and more. I felt surprised by the scale of the xylophone, delighted by the simplicity and beauty of the music, and energized by curiosity. So much wonder produced by a short 2-minute video.

To say more would spoil your own experience of this gem. I hope it refreshes and reenergizes you!
