AURA PERSONAL STYLING: WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

This week's style principle is the Art of Accessorising.

If you have ever put an outfit combination together and wondered why it feels a little flat, it may be missing accessories!

The humble accessory is often forgotten as we build our wardrobes, yet accessories allow us to style our clothes differently, making an outfit combination feel fresh and new. Interestingly, learning how to accessorise is one of the most common outcomes that our clients want to achieve at the end of a styling experience and accessories, like necklaces, earrings, belts and handbags are almost always a "gap" we identify at the end of a wardrobe cleanse.

Matching the colour of your handbag and sunglasses can bring cohesion to an outfit. This same principle could be applied to your belt and shoes. If you've added a leopard print belt or shoe to your outfit, you can bring in a brown or black belt and bag to tie it all together.

Swapping out a heel for a sneaker will instantly take an outfit from smart to casual.

Tying a neck-scarf elegantly around your neck can add a pop of colour to an all black ensemble.

A statement earring, necklace stack or bracelet will add instant polish to a casual outfit of jeans and a shirt.

Curating an everyday jewellery combination is a quick and easy way to elevate an outfit without having to think about it (ours is a watch, rings, gold bracelet and gold earrings).

#1 WE'RE READING - Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington

Grace Coddington was the Creative Director at American Vogue for 25 years. Heralded as a creative genius by industry insiders and fashion lovers, she was forced into the (mainstream) limelight after the public took a liking to her in The September Issue (2007). Her memoir is a witty, direct and honest account of her intriguing and creative life. A book which we found in a local, second hand book store for the bargain price of $10.00, it has been on our bookshelf calling to be read for awhile. Given the cover's nod to Aura's colour palette, we thought we'd crack it open. Luckily, it didn't disappoint!

#2 - WE'RE LISTENING TO: Desert Island Discs - Stella McCartney hosted by Kirsty Young

If you haven't listened to Desert Island Discs, you are in for a treat. With guests ranging from comedians, judges, lawyers, fashion designers, actors, musicians (the Keith Richards episode is another favourite), it is brilliantly done. This episode with Stella McCartney touches on her extra-ordinary childhood, how she came to be a fashion designer, the sustainable practices she brings to her designs and the ethics around the cost of designer goods. Kirsty Young pulls no punches in this interview and Stella really holds her own. Let us know if you give it a listen!

#1 WE'RE WATCHING - The Beatles: Get Back on Disney +

This docu-series directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) provides an inside look into the making of the Beatles' album Let It Be (the working title for the album was Get Back). A fascinating look at their creative process during a time when tensions between band members were rising and their relationships were clearly strained. The episodes are based on 60 hours of video footage and voice recordings. It is co-produced by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, which brings an intimacy and legitimacy to the docu-series. This is definitely for a diehard Beatles fan and music lover as the episodes are very long and can feel a little slow at times (the second episode is 3 hours!!), we're watching this in juicy, 1 hour instalments rather than binge watching in one sitting.

Over on the Blog, we've styled a midi/maxi skirt 3 ways for Winter.

Finding ways to bring our summer pieces into the colder months is a fun and creative way to get more wear out of our clothes. Pairing your boots back with your skirt is an easy way to take it from Summer to Winter. For more on trend styling, you could wear chunky loafers with socks. Finish any look with a long coat or a cropped jacket to bring the outfit together.

Check out our Winter Lookbooks for more Winter style inspiration. These also include shoppable links to the pieces referred to in our guides.

The Harmonic is an online store selling carefully selected once-loved clothes from predominantly Australian and New Zealand-owned labels. With a mission "to create a more sustainable and circular fashion ecosystem" and a simple ethos "to consume consciously, to repurpose with purpose, to re-visit and re-love", it is no surprise that we have fallen in love with the brand. Their customer service is next to none and their site is well designed to show case their latest items. We can personally attest to the quality of the items and their service having shopped with them both online and in store. We provided a sneak peak into their Bondi Pop-Up store on our Instagram this week. Make sure you keep an eye out for our post next week as we will be styling up our forever pieces!
