Happy Halloween Boo-tiful Round-Up Readers!
Starting on a serious note, climate change is actually really scary. COP26 began today in Glasgow, delegates from around 200 countries will announce how they plan to cut emissions by 2030 and help the planet, the WSJ just reported, "G-20 Nationals Agree to Speed Up Climate Action, but Fail to Agree to Concrete Measures." The Guardian has lots of explanations of what COP26 hopes to accomplish.
Doing our part, this week on hertelier we will be sharing and reporting on best practices we are seeing in sustainability across the lodging sector. Email me (emily@hertelier.com) if you or your hotel has something to share! And, if you missed our explainer on ESG, or our interviews with Michelle Devlin, head of sustainability for Red Carnation Hotels, or Beyond Green's Undraa Buyannemekh, President, Nomadic Expeditions & Three Camel Lodge, Mongolia, now is a good time to check them out.
Other news stories you need to know about from this week:
The world's top business cities are failing women. A BloombergBusinessweek analysis of how 15 global cities rank for career women shows each failing in several ways. Toronto came in first, scoring 3.66 out of a possible 5, and São Paulo last, with a 2.68. Bloomberg graded each city in five areas: safety, mobility, maternity provisions, equality, and wealth (a measure of earning potential and financial independence) and weighted those equally to form an overall ranking. The performance from best to worst reveals that structural and social gender inequalities remain rife everywhere.
Small and medium-sized companies are back traveling for work. Hilton CEO Chris Nasetta said in this week's earnings call, "Many of these (SME) businesses don’t have the luxury of being able to entirely work remotely and had to stay on the road and work in person." He claimed 70 percent of U.S. businesses are now back on the road. Demand from smaller businesses is only five to 10 percent off 2019 levels, and he cited this as a reason for Hilton's second quarter of profitability according to Skift.
Rental cars going green. Just in time for COP26, Hertz announced a partnership with Uber and Tesla to offer 50,000 electric vehicles. Driving in the right direction and hopefully, others will follow.
New York City and Cancun are top Thanksgiving travel destinations. Allianz Partners analyzed 2.3 million travel itineraries with roundtrip flights departing U.S. airports around the Thanksgiving holiday. The top US cities were: NYC, Seattle, and Boston, while the top international spots were: Mexico, the UK, and Jamaica.
