Newsletter October 3, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

Ever wonder why they are called "services"? Shabbat "services"? Rosh Hashanah "services"? Yom Kippur "services"? The word in Hebrew is actually avodah, and that means "work."  This was more apparent in the ancient world when worship involved the very physical "work" of the sacrifice of animals. But today, we are far removed from that type of "work." And yet, everyone involved with the preparation of services throughout the Jewish world these days is keenly attuned to the reason why this type of activity is called "work." Preparing meaningful experiences properly recognizing the holy day season is an act of sacred service. A great showing of love for God and community.

Over the past 14 weeks, our Keeping It Sacred team has lovingly prepared services for the entire community. Envisioning the program and bringing the team together. Creating art and events to register online. Publicizing and managing zoom connectivity. Thoughtfully crafting a balance of song and words, performative pieces and participatory pieces, wisdom from across our tradition, and participant interaction. Making sure technology the day of the service works, and, for our hybrid event, essentially planning three services: one for those tuning in online, one for those in person, and one to bring the experience of the two together. (For more on this idea, see this article: https://mailchi.mp/priyaparker/feeling-disconnected-from-your-team-10155807?e=4cc87713e2).

I want to lift up the avodah/service of our two exceedingly talented Cantorial Soloists Elizabeth Lange and Jeffrey Silverstein, our creative Digital Marketing Manager Molly Flanagan, and our amazing Tech Team Ilan Tamir and Fatima Salcedo. I am certain you'll agree with me that their service has been appreciated immensely. If you'd like to join me in sending them thanks, please do so at info@keepingitsacred.com. Or you can thank them in the chat at any of our upcoming programs (Yom Kippur begins Tuesday night), found at: keepingitsacred.com/upcoming-1. And if you'd like to make a contribution to KITS in their honor, please do so at: keepingitsacred.com/our-future.

There is a saying that the whole world rests on three things: On Torah/Sacred Teaching, on Avodah/Service, and on G'milut Chasadim/Acts of Kindness. Fortunately, we have all three in spades here at Keeping It Sacred.

Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

THIS THURSDAY AND EVERY THURSDAY! Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 33 different states and 9 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.
