There are a lot of new faces around here at Fight Like A Warrior!

 

Please join us in welcoming the newest additions to our team! We are so grateful to have them all on board with us! Their experience with advocacy, leadership, and writing will be an exciting asset to our team & we know our community members will love them too!

National Lazy Day!

 

“You’re so lazy.” These words are often heard by those facing chronic fatigue. The reality is that we are not lazy, rather, we are doing exactly what our body needs, resting!

 

August 10th was National Lazy Day, and we want to remind everyone to have a “lazy” day whenever you need it. Do not let others control what you do, know that what you are doing is essential for your health and wellbeing. Think of it like the water we need to live. Just as everyone needs water to continue living, those with chronic fatigue need an added amount of rest. When you get “thirsty” you drink water and when you get fatigued, you need rest. 

 

This all being said, remember that you are not being lazy by taking a day off or just staying in bed. While it may be difficult to accept at times or hear the judgement of others, always remember that they do not fully understand the importance of what you are doing. You will always know what is best for you and do not let others change that. Take your “lazy” day and give yourself rest, today and every day that you need. 

You are never alone!

 

So many of us start our chronic illness or disability journey feeling helpless and alone. We all want someone who completely understands what we are going through and who can tell us that what we are feeling is normal or that everything is going to be okay. It can feel so isolating at first when we are grieving the loss of who we though we were before getting sick.

This is why we try to provide a space for all of you in the online community. Many of us turn to the online community because it is much easier to find others that are also in our shoes. And in those relationships we form, we find a sort of peace.

If you are feeling scared or sad or alone today, just know there ARE other people out there who are going through the exact same thing. You are NEVER ALONE. Tell us who in the community has inspired you or helped you to feel understood or heard!

OUR TEAM IS GROWING!

 

Love reading our newsletter every month? Ever thought about working for a non-profit organization that supports a cause that is important to you? Fight Like a Warrior is looking to add to our Communications team!

 

We are currently looking for someone to fill the role of our Newsletter Coordinator. If you have any interest, please email your resume and cover letter to cienna.ditri@fightlikeawarrior.org. We will be accepting submissions until September 13th, 2021. 

 

***Please note that this is not a paid position and that all positions at Fight Like a Warrior are on a strictly volunteer basis. We can structure the position as an internship or fellowship though, if necessary.***

One Saturday of each month, we will be going live on Instagram to bring you a virtual cook-along of a delicious meal meant for spoonies. These quick and easy meals can be altered to meet specific dietary restrictions and will be perfect for making on those days where you're low on spoons but don't want to sacrifice tastiness! We will be posting the recipe, accessibility requirements, and possible substitutions you might use for the meal each month in our newsletter. That way you have time to get your ingredients so you can cook right along with us if you would like to! These videos will be saved on our social media pages if you weren't able to come to the Instagram live or if you want to cook the meal again! We encourage you to submit your own “spoonie meal” recipes that you love to kelsey.calimer@fightlikeawarrior.org to help us build up this excellent resource for all others living with a chronic illness or disability and for the chance for us to make it in our cook-along! These can be recipes you have created yourself or ones you have found elsewhere and have grown to love! 

 

This month's Spoonie Meal Saturday will take place on:  
SEPTEMBER 18th @ 7:00pm EST/4:00pm PST

We will be making:

Vegan Ramen Stir Fry (serves 3)

 

The Ingredients you will need are:
 

2 packages of dried ramen noodles

2 tbsp neutral-flavoured oil

1 heaping tsp of finely chopped ginger

2 cloves of garlic finely chopped

2 green onions chopped and white and green parts separated

2 carrots peeled and sliced into rounds

½ head of broccoli cut into florets

½ a red pepper cubed

½ a zucchini chopped


For the stir fry sauce:

 

¼ cup plus 2 tbsp vegetable stock

3 tablespoons soy sauce

1 ½ tablespoons molasses

1 tablespoon sriracha

1 ½ teaspoons cornstarch

 

Accessible prep:
If you have trouble holding or using knives/other tools, please purchase pre-minced ginger and garlic, pre-cut carrots, broccoli, and red pepper. We will be making this without meat but feel free to add it to your own meal, if you'd like
