August 1st is the Celtic feast called Lughnasadh, it is one of three harvest festivals celebrated in the pagan wheel of the year. It is a festival where one would celebrate the bounty of their first harvest, feast on the first fruits of their labour, and would perform rituals around protecting their crops and livestock. Handfasting (marriage ceremony) were very common during Lughnasadh. It's a celebratory time, filled with large feasts, dancing, protection and ritual. Ritual ideas to celebrate Lughnasadh: - Create an altar to honour the festival, with colours of the season (reds, yellows, greens, oranges), candles and symbols of the field (wheat, fruits, vegetables, honey, bread, corn).
- Light a tea light candle, close your eyes and think of all the blessings in your life, the growth you’ve had and offer thanks. Then Visualize all the blessings to still to be harvested and offer your gratitude. Let you candle burn out (in a safe manner).
- Bake bread, this is a traditional practice. When you bake break, we use the grain around us to sustain our bodies and consume natures holy gifts.
- Cook up a feast with your family and friends.
- Have a fire and write down all your regrets (from the past season) on paper/corn husks or project your regrets into pine cones and toss them into the fire to release them.
- Wonderful time to make your preserves.
- Honour the Grain Goddess and Create a corn doll. She is your representation of harvest. I created a how to video for you below!

|
A corn husk doll is a Native American doll made out of the dried leaves or "husk" of a corn cob. - Corn dollies are magical charms thought to protect the home, livestock, and personal wellness of the maker and their family.
- They may be a home for the spirit of the crop. The tradition pertains to the idea that the crop of grain has a spirit that loses its home after the final harvest and it is therefore to be invited and housed in the home over the winter before being returned to the earth in spring for the next crop.
Enjoy making these blessed dolls! |
