Make Do and Mend

Sewing by hand is a great skill. You don't need a machine, it's relaxing, and similar to crochet or knitting you can take it with you. Hand sewing is usually the first sewing skill we learn. Kids as young as 3 can use a large, not so pointy, darning needle and learn to lace beads as a first lesson in sewing. Once you have the rhythm of straight line sewing you can mend your clothes. Some holes might be a bit large, you can then use colorful embroidery thread to mend the hole and add some pizazz!

Hints and Hacks

Woven Fabric and Grain

The grain refers to the threads used to create the fabric. There are three named grains in woven fabric: lengthwise grain, cross grain and the bias. The lengthwise grain runs from cut edge to cut edge, the cross grain runs from selvage to selvage, and the bias (true bias) runs at a 45 degree angle from lengthwise grain to the cross grain. Gently pull the fabric on the lengthwise grain and you will see hardly any stretch, pull on the cross grain and see a slight stretch, pull on the bias and see much more stretch. Before cutting into your woven fabric, be sure the fabric is aligned on the "Straight of Grain" - the crosswise and lengthwise grains are perpendicular to each other. Fold the fabric and align the cut edges together, then try to align the salvage edges together. If the fold is 'wonky' the fabric is not on the straight of grain. Here is an excellent video on how to get your fabric aligned on the straight of grain. Tips for finding the straight of grain

A pattern aligned and cut properly on the proper grain will assure the garment will stretch where needed and not stretch where it shouldn't. When quilting, be sure all outer pieces of a patchwork are cut on the cross or straight grain. If outer quilt pieces are on the bias, they will stretch and cause alignment problems when sewing the patchwork together.
