Research Insights:

Hormone therapy for women at an increased risk of breast cancer

Overall, the article emphasizes that hormone therapies, both contraceptive and menopausal, can be safely offered to women at high risk for breast cancer, with benefits often outweighing potential risks.

Key Points:

  1. Contraceptive Use:

    • Hormonal contraception is generally safe for women at increased breast cancer risk, with the added benefits of reducing ovarian and endometrial cancer risks.

    • Studies have shown that women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations can safely use oral contraceptives, which also reduce ovarian cancer risk.

  2. Menopausal Hormone Therapy (HT):

    • Women with BRCA mutations who undergo early surgical menopause can use hormone therapy without negating the benefits of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy.

    • For women at increased risk but without genetic mutations, menopausal hormone therapy, especially within 10 years of menopause, offers more benefits than risks.

  3. Shared Decision-Making:

    • It’s crucial for healthcare providers to have informed discussions with high-risk patients about the benefits and risks of hormone therapies to support individualized treatment choices.

Favorite restaurant:

Poppy

12502 Larchmere Blvd,
Cleveland, OH

Rachel's pick:

“Our idea about Poppy really flourished when we saw the space and the legacy of Margaret Mueller left behind.  We were told stories of Margaret, and she was almost always said to be a "force", "badass", and a broad.  All things that my grandmother encompassed.  The beautiful house reminded me of the home that Poppy built for all 6 of her children and 13 grandchildren.  A full dinner spread was served every night at 5pm on the dot. A perfectly set table to go right along with it. Our vision will be much similar with a traditional menu, apps, soup/salad, entrees.

Our mission statement?  Not sure if we really have one, other than everyone has a seat at the table.

"A few of our favorite things:"

Anna's pick:

Cranberry is not just an old wives tale! Ellura is a potent urinary tract and cranberry supplement that prevents chronic urinary tract infections, made with 36 mg of PAC. I like to have options for my patients and Ellura is a great option if you are struggling with urinary tract infections.

What we are reading:

The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women by Valerie Young, Ed.D.

Jean's pick: This book explores "Imposter Syndrome," a psychological pattern where capable women doubt their abilities and fear being exposed as frauds. Valerie Young delves into how this phenomenon particularly affects women, despite their achievements, and provides insights into why these feelings persist, how to overcome them, and embrace success.

We had a fantastic time at our last retreat hosted at Michael Angelo's Winery; 5515 Broadview Road, Richfield, Ohio. Special thanks to Solv Wellness for their generous support of the retreat and women's health in general
