Like many parts of the US, June has slowly turned into a hot month, but despite the heat, the summer has been sunny, green and full of colorful flowers here on the East Coast. These are great days for enjoying coffee and lunch outdoors, and on occasion, making art on the back deck while soaking up the sun. These sunny thoughts worked its way into my art; see two of my summer inspired pieces below in the section called "Pieces from My Sketchbook". Another fun inspiration (and accidental theme) was hats. I made 4 different oil pastel drawings, one gouache painting, and an acrylic painting; all are ladies wearing different types of hats. Sadly, the June Virtual Market with art demos was cancelled, but hopefully, July's which is scheduled for July 17 - 22, will still occur. Find updates on my Events page. Though I don't have any new demos, previously recorded ones are on my YouTube channel: Art Demo Playlist. The Guilford Art League's Spring show wraps up this month and transitions to a summer show on July 9. Though I haven't selected yet what pieces I will enter, I have several acrylic pieces I made earlier this year to choose. |

Pieces from My Sketchbooks |
For the last year or so, I have been making most of my art in sketchbooks. Though I have worked in sketchbooks of various sizes, I have found I really enjoy working in books that measure approximately 8 to 8.5 inches by 5 to 5.5 inches. One of my new favorite sketchbooks is a Moleskine Watercolor Art Sketchbook, which measures 8.25 x 5". Here are two recent pieces from that sketchbook that remind of the season's warmth, colors and abundant life of nature. The one on the left is gouache and pencil, which I call "Yellow Butterfly", and the one on the right is an oil pastel, which is called "Spring Muse". |
