Sea What's New!

World Ocean Day

On Saturday, June 8 the Sea & Learn Foundation and Sea Saba collaborated on a World Ocean Day community outreach and fundraising activity. This event allowed members of the community to gain exposure to scuba diving in a shallow, protected area of Saba’s harbor while also enjoying food and music.

People aged 8 and up in the community were invited to come out and try scuba diving for free, compliments of Sea Saba. A total of 16 people (12 kids!) got to experience the magical feeling of breathing underwater through a regulator for the first time! During the event, Colibri Cafe catered a delicious BBQ for 80 people. More than $1,000 was raised to support scuba diving training and marine ecology education for Saba’s youth.

Create & Learn

We've had seven talented artists provide engaging workshops, leaving participants with stunning creations. This quarter included a trash sculptor, wood carver, potter, sculptor and Carnival costume maker. There is one more Create & Learn event coming up this year that you don't want to miss! Mark Hemmings will lead smartphone photography classes (he literally wrote the book on it) while Yulia Anderson will get us in the holiday spirit with Christmas crafting!

Sea & Learn

This October marks the 21st annual Sea & Learn program. Within our regular event format, we are including an additional mini theme: Seeking Safe, Secure, and Sustainable Seafood for Saba (6-S). As fishing is part of Saba’s culture, the 6-S project is designed to prioritize the sustainability, security and safety of its key seafood species, which are targeted by fishermen. Incorporating both localized knowledge from Saba’s fishermen as well as scientific expertise ensures a more interactive and meaningful program. Check out our website to see the growing list of scientists coming this October!

Adopt-A-Box

We want to hear from you! Thanks to additional funding from Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie, we are able to elevate the Adopt-A-Box project. As a result, we will be establishing Heritage Advisory Committees to ensure we are able to showcase more stories that are key to Saba's culture. We invite the community to help us bring Saba's history into the present to remain a fixture for the future. All adopted boxes are featured on our website and the unveilings are available on the Sea & Learn Foundation's YouTube channel. A walking tour map coming soon!

Science SEAkers

Our 6th grade “Science SEAkers” learned more about the marine environment before heading out on summer vacation. They toured the Saba Research Center to learn more about the urchin restoration project and why urchins are important creatures for Saba's reefs. They concluded their program with a boat tour to observe this year's topics from another perspective. And of course, they were able to jump in and snorkel to experience the underwater world for themselves!

Year-Round Environmental Programs

As part of the Nature and Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP), we've been hosting additional educational workshops. A vertical farming workshop showed the community that you can grow more with less space than traditional farming. We brought the workshop to Under the Hill housing area to encourage more participation. A wicking bed workshop (and more) is being planned after the summer.

2024 may only be half over but as always, we are already planning ahead for 2025! From January through March of 2025 (with a sneak peak in October), there will be more than 20 scientists coming to Saba to conduct a baseline sampling of Saba's invertebrates--ranging from wasps to butterflies to scorpions to snails. YOU are invited to participate in this research...who knows what you may discover!
