Feature ArticleDifferential Reinforcement A 'not so science-y' approach to behavior |
Differential reinforcement may sound like a scary "science-y" term, but it simply is a strategy used to decrease unwanted behaviors. This may include but is not limited to a form of aggressive behavior, elopement, cursing and dropping. Differential reinforcement is put into place to weaken a behavior that may be impeding learning, or daily living. There are several variations of differential reinforcement. Which form to implement depends on the learner, and the behavior at hand. It is important when implementing differential reinforcement to refrain from reinforcing the unwanted behavior itself. Below is a chart with the various forms of differential reinforcement and examples. |

Jaslie Castellanos, Lead Behavior Therapist Jaslie is originally from Manhattan but has lived here long enough to call herself a Jersey Girl! She has been with Rainbow for almost two years now and recently took the role of Lead Behavior Therapist at the Rainbow Center. When asked what her favorite thing about Rainbow is, Jaslie responded: "I truly love how much all of my supervisors have been willing to teach me. It’s the best hands-on experience you can get." Her advice to parents is, "Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If there is something you’re not fully understanding, whether it be terminology or a new behavior, don’t be afraid to ask. We’re all on the same team." In her spare time, Jaslie enjoys photography. Jaslie is a great addition to the Rainbow Team! |
